Hushed flurries of snow
Spread fast as whispered rumours
Scatter everywhere.

She is the founder of her own misfortune. She gives it air to breathe and feeds it doubts. But she also nurtures hope, takes it for long walks and whispers secrets to it. They walk together and balance along edges. Companions that decided long ago to stay together.

I circle your light,
a moth drawn to borrowed warmth,
wings ache, still I stay.

Flour, sugar, butter, salt
list checked twice
so I’m not at fault

Scissors, paper, tape
packages gathered
that just have to wait

Gloves, hat, scarf, boots
things that bring
the season’s fruits

Lights, stockings, tree
time given now
for friends beyond me

The delay
A taut string pulled
Between two hands
Snapped by the inhale
Inside the release
Nothing left but the aftershock
A tremor in the bone

I can see my breath,
But the word I spoke is gone,
Vanished in cold air.

Slovak farmer’s good morning,
daughter remembers.

Love still
threads
its way
through
the noise,
quiet but
unbroken,
insisting on
being felt.
Even as the
world fractures,
it softens
what it can.
We hold
one another
in the storm,
a single touch
becoming
fiercely
relevant.
And somehow,
that small
tenderness
keeps us
human.

“Two small saplings:
rooted, sprouted, reaching.
Their spindly branches
search for the sky,
the sun, and each other.

They twist their limbs,
intertwining in a spiral
that strengthens and stabilizes
them both to thin trunks’ core.”

Seasons change
and I feel myself fall
with the auburn autumn leaves.

Keep my bare branches
sturdy and strong through
the crisping cracking winter wind.

May the sap of my spirit
flow warmly beneath
the bark of my winter’s rest,
and bring forth green growth
in spring’s return.

When my sister cries,
her fingertips search for answers.
I haven’t the heart to tell her
that the corduroy ridges
on my knee or the seams
on the shoulder of my dress
couldn’t begin to address her questions.
When we hold each other,
let us cry without the answers
and be at peace with the mysteries.

I remember your #berry stained lips
As you handed me some too
The innocence of you
The innocence of me
A #kindness true
When our legs
Were little
And smiles
Bigger
A little
Too
Long

And when the world
beyond your family
becomes too heavy to bare
bring your family
into the hurting world.

Hold hands tightly
and let your love
be seen by all.
Make new family
by those willing
to take your hands.

And when your family
then reaches beyond the world,
be home and
love the change.

Precisely! This poem is my retelling of the ancient Arabic legend "Layla and Majnun". Here Layla takes agency to leave the garden and the pair pursue a happier ending together

Meet me at the
edge of the garden.
Tell no one
you’re leaving.
I will know
when you’ve arrived.

I will scale
the brambled
briared hedge,
if you don’t mind
the thorned scratches
down my forearm.

If I leap from the
edge of the garden,
do you think
they’d notice
our absence
by morning?
