Was listening to Malka Older’s The Mimicking of Known Successes before bed, and she broke out the phrase “congenitally rich” for the group of people who, with their near-terminally extractive mindset, had worked hardest to help humans lose a habitable Earth.

…oh.

Oh, okay, that makes a relieving sort of sense.
I didn’t have access to internet or even cable TV at that age, and my dad taught me about genocide fairly early, but in a very grave manner.

I was imagining the adults in this kid’s life saying fairly awful things within their hearing.

Knowing about history and that horrible harm can be done to others isn’t surprising, but there’s so much they have to soak up to know that specific people groups were targeted for a genocide, and that “jokes” about specific people groups are funny, and that people *make* jokes about violent death.

I have more thoughts on age of that acquired knowledge, but I meant I was concerned that a kindergartener (age 5 or 6) would be exposed to attitudes and behaviors such that they’d think people being murdered was *funny.*

I’d guess they have disturbing or neglectful adults in their life.

I hope you will still get to live somewhere with a pretty view.

Not much of a meats person, but:

1. Would eat this pizza.
2. Adore the name.

Yikes.
Good for you, but I'm worried about how a kindergartener even had the knowledge to make a Holocaust joke.

Give me a day or two and I’ll hunt up some stuff for you.

In the meantime, there’s good, free info on some of Patheos’ Pagan blogs, and while there are a lot of authors & witches blogging there, a keyword search might help? (I haven’t been over there in a minute.)

Hi friends! I’m now just $200 away from being able to see the doctor who helps manage my chronic illness.

I couldn’t afford health ins. premiums this year, so all costs are out of pocket—and w/ appointments filling up months in advance, I can’t miss this visit.

Please help me get medical care!

Pigeon perched on branch with foliage in the background, description from ebird: ‘Medium-sized chunky pigeon that is dark blue with a pale gray hood. Appears short-tailed in flight. Found in rainforest, secondary habitat, and plantations, and locally in dry coastal scrub. Most common at higher elevations in most of its range. Most often seen perched up conspicuously on emergent trees, feeding on fruiting trees, or in flight in small flocks. The common vocalization is a quick series of low hoots or growls. Dark blue coloration and pale head separate it from all other pigeons in its range.’

I can’t enjoy it (went the medical route, only to find it doesn’t agree with my brain chemistry) but it helps a lot of other people—even if all it’s helping some of them do is relax or have fun.

And it’s never been something people should be punished over.

Thank you. ✨💜

Absolutely. If what I want is to be present in the moment to narrate dice-roll results, play NPCs, and run encounters, then I should probably look for a co-GM to help with planning, puzzle design, etc.
More collaboration = more joy, free of plagiarism or harm to our environment.

I'm editing my first fantasy book for a client, and cannot begin to tell y'all what a joy it is to have to set timers to *make* myself stop at regular intervals.

The intervals are necessary to manage pain and prevent stiffness and spasms.
The timer is necessary because I'm having so much fun.

Yuck.
That’s a sign to either find a new hobby, or hand that aspect of your current one over to someone who cares enough to invest their own imagination and effort.

We keep getting fire-weather warnings up here in Leon County. My yard—the grass, along with the clover and sorrel that usually grace it this time of year—is mostly dead, brittle brown stuff.

The drought’s hitting N. FL hard; I hope your area stays fire-free, and sees some relief soon.

Mutual aid request: I have $50/$1225 total for May rent and a medical appt. I can’t afford to miss.

I’m a disabled freelancer—this doctor visit determines continued access to the medications that allow me to work at all.

Please share widely, and thank for for your help!

Scattershot answers, I know, but I wanted to throw stuff out in case anything in particular sounds interesting or fun.

I think we’re all born with magic, and should move toward what’s pulling at us already. Within that, I’d start with spells that address current needs and don’t cost much. 💜

If you feel a pull toward astrology, tarot, or psychic-type stuff, there’s magic you can combine there, too.*

For me, I would start with whatever’s at hand—a candle spell, or a simple protection spell for your home (like a salt bowl), or speaking intentions into the food and drink you prepare.

If you like doodling and secret codes: sigil &/or chaos magic*.

If you’re a happy homebody, hearth or kitchen magic might be a good starting lens.

Gardening: Magical herbalism or perhaps nature religions.

In terms of interests, if you have particular cultures that interest you, and you want some religion in the mix, there are various reconstructed traditions (e.g., druidism, heathenry), and books on areas as specific as one people’s magic, like Welsh witchcraft*.

* = I can rec authors.

For reading, my best very broad recommendation is to think of what interests you, and look for books on that (more thoughts on this below).

Also know who some of the solid publishers are—Llewellyn and Weiser are both reliable imprints who work with multiple authors I respect.

My friend Rook is one of the most conscientious, kind people I know—passionate, smart, and so open to the beauty of the world.

They also live with pain and activity-limiting health problems which cannot be fixed in a hurry. And their rent just went up.

Anything you can send will help. 💜

I’m sorry, Kari. You deserve stories that don’t hurt you.

People who are trying to dream better worlds, and write about community and connection, should work especially hard to make their stories welcoming.

And there’s never been a time that shouldn’t have been the case.

I’m so used to apologizing for people I do it for folks I don’t even know.

Thanks for reminding me that I don’t have to continually soften my own discomfort.
