I’m sorry to hear this, Larisa. Your work is a model for fundamental research engaging fully in qs demanded by the world around us. Though I've left the field, our convos continue to affect my thinking. Wishing you well and a smooth transition to a department that values you and your contributions.

Thanks for sharing this document, @rweingarten.bsky.social.

I read it, and I believe it's inexcusably inadequate and will not prepare teachers or schools to confront the very real dangers of the "A.i." products pushed by your partners, including OpenAI.

A few thoughts for your consideration...

Good point - also quite possible!

This agreement reads to me as Microsoft belatedly realizing that OpenAI is not a reliable authority on the status of AGI and wanting to claw back OpenAI’s exclusive ability to end their business partnership via the “it’s alive!” clause.

(Agreed that the panel is absurd.)

Really appreciate your reflections here, but AOC is using the term correctly and in alignment with your point. Stochastic refers to a non-deterministic system: One statement doesn’t directly cause violence. But a statement can raise the overall risk of violence, which plays out over time.

This is great reporting. Thank you for pushing back on such misleading claims.

As a cognitive scientist, I was so frustrated that my field leaned into saying brain regions “light up.” That's not only a misleading confusion of data visualization with actual neural activity; it also obscures that the visualization reflects analyses that subtract the (extensive) baseline activity

ooo, thanks for the tip! I had not seen this, but I dig indeed. Nice to see the collaboration with Youth/Martin Glover continue.

Under Trump, the average length of time a child spends in immigration custody has increased dramatically.

In December 2024, the stay for a child in ORR custody was about two months.

By March of this year, it had nearly tripled.

I stood up in court today and explained why little kids shouldn’t face a deportation system alone, while the federal government tried to block me at every turn. Here’s why this win matters: 🧵

This doesn’t work, as @tabouchadi.bsky.social wrote about again this weekend in re: 🇪🇺 mainstream parties & immigration: verfassungsblog.de/aus-dem-abse.... It backfires & makes the far right stronger. Democrats in 🇺🇸 need to get it together & stop defaulting to this bad strategy.

Herndon engages directly with ethical considerations of AI use, but the NBHS company also has a product that scrapes the web for music, separates audio stems, and uses that in a generative AI music production application. So...

I'd love to learn more and am not sure what I think. I also dug around -- the AI sound company also contributed to Holly Herndon's voice model, and the "modelled on" credit mentions both the cuckoo voice actor and Herndon. So maybe ran the actor's voice through the Herndon model?
