Remember, children have an incredible amount of suspension of disbelief, so your responsibility to tread carefully is multiplied to the maximum degree.
On this set, I worked with children aged between 3.5-10 years. And they were some of the most incredible actors I have ever worked with:
And it’s your responsibility to never take advantage of that, to never exploit them and to treat them with dignity and respect, and to protect them from whatever they don’t need to be exposed to.
Once you simplify your ask, they are perfectly capable of giving you amazing performances.
I have found children to be exceptionally open and vulnerable and willing to give you whatever you need as a director.
The biggest mistake directors make when working with children is treating them like children. i.e. Patronizing them, treating them as too simple to understand what you need from their performance. That’s entirely false. It’s complicated direction they cannot cope with (same as most actors really).
