Williams is gifted, but if it was just him, everyone would also know the imperial leitmotif that only appeared in A New Hope before being replaced by The Imperial March
most people don’t
Doesn’t matter how good the composer is if the music is poorly used, underused, or replaced immediately.

An additional argument that quality of score doesn’t determine memorability
If we look back at the most recent 10 Oscar winners for best score, you probably can’t hum more than one or two of them (I can’t and I obsessively listen to film scores)
(The only one I can is Marvel)
John Williams can put a great leitmotif in, and you don’t remember it just cause it wasn’t very prominent, and wasn’t repeated much, and then disappeared
Marvel music isn’t bad. It’s good, interesting music that is, for the most part, poorly used.
6/6
But that melody only appeared in one movie, no marketing, and was replaced. And wasn’t very prominent in the movie
So it’s much less memorable than all the other themes from Star Wars
So just cause you struggle to remember something doesn’t mean it was poorly written

Whereas marvel themes, aside from avengers, antman, and spidey, tend to only feature in one movie and get replaced with a different melody.
Can you hum the theme of Darth Vader from BEFORE the imperial March was written?
Perhaps if you’ve paid close attention to the score
4/
The reason you think of it, the reason the melody is likely STILL in your head to this day associated with GOTG, is because it appeared in EVERY trailer for BOTH movies.
Marketing decides whether you remember and hum a theme song. And it helps if the music is reused
3/
Or Star Wars, or Pirates of the Caribbean
Here’s the proof: what song immediately comes to mind when you think of Guardians of the Galaxy?
It’s probably Hooked on a Feeling
Which is odd, because the song only appears once in the movie, and it’s not even the opening credits

Fun fact: the main reason you can easily remember and hum Jaws, Star Wars, Bond, Harry Potter, etc.
Isnt how good the melody is, it’s repetition and marketing.
Other than the Avengers theme, marvel scores NEVER appear in trailers or toy commercials like Harry Potter

Agatha: Self image is complicated, no on is an island. The power of song is groovy dude.
Cap 4: Presidents should be held accountable for obvious crimes. Be a good person and inspire others to do the same.
Daredevil: fascism bad, rich thugs in office bad, criminals bad.
3 out of 49
Secret Invasion: Hard to pinpoint themes but the American government spreading bigotry is one of them.
The Marvels: war is bad and leads to more problems.
Echo: honor the past, don’t be controlled by it.
Deadpool 3: Boy he sure is wacky
3 out of 46
Quantumania: Conquering is bad. Shrinking police cars in protest is lit. Holes are funny.
GOTG 3: animal abuse is super extra bad. The worst. Indescribable evil. Playing god with your power is wrong. Everyone deserves a second chance. Except people who abuse animals
3 out of 42
Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special: Actors aren’t all bad. The holiday spirit is beautiful. Look at Dave Bautista being ridiculous.
So now we’re at 3 out of 40 Marvel Studios projects with a vaguely positive theme or view on military or police.
Wakanda Forever: The American military would probably take over everything if they could without consequence. There is exactly one (1) good dude in the government. War is still bad. Hyper nationalism is still bad. Vengeance is bad. Science is cool.
She-Hulk: Misogyny is bad. Particularly online incel misogyny is bad. Like seriously internet trolls who hate women are a scourge. Also 4th wall breaks are fun.
Werewolf by Night: Different doesn’t mean bad. Scary doesn’t mean evil.
Thor: Love and Thunder: Love can become magical. Vengeance darkens the heart, love is always the right choice.
This brings us to 3 out of 36 titles with an explicitly pro military stance
Not looking good for the propaganda side of this argument
Moon Knight: mental disorders do not make you lesser. Punishment before the crime is bad
Doctor Strange 2: Don’t use cursed books? A little faith can go a long way
Ms. Marvel: the government is shitty and the Muslim community is unfairly persecuted. Doing good > being good
Eternals: genocide is bad…? Don’t anger the space gods?
Hawkeye: I guess some cops are nice? Organized crime is bad?
NWH: Wow more Spider-Man! The government is mean.
So now we’re up to 3 out of… 32 titles that have a vaguely positive view on any sort of military or police
Loki: WIBBLY WOBBLY TIMEY WIMEY
And it’s never too late to be better
Black Widow: Enslaving girls is bad. The military is still being a dick.
your past doesn’t have to define you
What If: The Watcher is cool
Shang-Chi: your past doesn’t define you and don’t be an imperialist
/
FATWS: The military covered up their inhumane experiments on black people. Refugees should be listened to and respected.
I count 2 out of 25 at this point with an even vaguely positive view on the military and government.
And a lot of space magic
Conclusion: genocide is bad
/
Endgame: genocide is STILL bad and time travel is cool
Spider-Man2: fake news is bad, lying is bad, PROPAGANDA IS BAD
Wandavision: old sitcoms sure were wacky. grief changes you. Mental health is important. The government is still being a dick
/
Captain Marvel, the closest to being an ad for joining the Air Force, still carries a message of war is bad, the struggles of refugees from war, and a specific warning not to listen to the propaganda you’re fed
Don’t blindly trust when you’re told you’re on the right side
/
Black Panther: ultra-nationalism is bad. Globalism is good? Wealthy nations should help those less fortunate and sending the military to do that is problematic
Infinity War: even “fair” genocide is still bad. Purple aliens are mean
AntMan2: don’t get stuck in the quantum realm/
GOTG 2: Genocide is still bad. Groot is still cute.
Spider-Man: Your ability to do good may have to come before what you want in life. The Vulture is kinda generally anti-elite and sympathetic?
Thor 3: “greatness” built on imperialism is blood money and we have to do better
/
Avengers 2: The rapid development of technology could be dangerous and also everyone having nukes could be dangerous.
Ant-Man: war profiteering is bad, weapons always wind up in the wrong hands.
Civil War: international vigilantism is complicated.
Dr. Strange: dark magic bad /
Iron Man 3: The war on terror is largely about money and appearances. And is bad. Mental health is important.
Thor 2: destroying the universe with an infinity stone is bad.
Cap 2: NSA stuff is super dangerous and the government is corrupt.
GOTG: Genocide is bad. Groot is cute/
Thor: War is generally bad. Genocide is bad.
Captain America: WW2 military propaganda I guess? From when we were fighting Nazis, cause Nazis are bad. I’m sure we can agree
Avengers: Alien bugs and mischief gods are bad. Also the government tries to nuke NYC, which is bad.

Let’s break down the MCU’s messaging in a thread:
Iron Man: war profiteering is bad, the American war on terror facilitates more problems than it solves.
Hulk: The American military specifically is super corrupt and fucked up
Iron Man 2: The military cannot be trusted. At all.
I’m gonna start an updating thread to repost when I see people saying the MCU is just American military propaganda. Cause a couple titles are, but compared to the like 30 and counting titles in it, it’s a ridiculous accusation
Gonna go ahead and bring my big threads over from that other social media account and then delete that account.
Worth noting. It’s an extra level removed from Kimmel or Fallon doing it
Downey is playing a stupid character who’s doing it. In universe it is not meant to be a good thing.
