The math between what people can earn and what they can afford just doesn’t add up, which is why no one solution can solve NC’s housing affordability crisis. We need Supply, Subsidy, Stability, and Systems to make effective change.
And 17 of the 25 most common occupations pay median wages that are less than what a full-time worker needs to afford a modest 1-BR rental home at the national average Fair Market Rent. #OOR25
The housing crisis isn’t just an urban problem. A minimum wage worker who lives in rural NC would need to work on average more than 2 jobs to afford a modest 1-BR rental home. #OOR25
Minimum wage earners in our state must work 150 hours a week to afford a 2-br apartment, or the equivalent of 3.3 jobs to afford a 1-br apartment. #OOR25
To afford a modest 2-br apt in NC, you need to make $27.14/hr, a nearly $2 hourly increase since 2024. #OOR25 nlihc.org/oor/state/nc
