Historic black and white photo of the Albert Sullivan House was a home located at 4575 South Lake Park Avenue in the Kenwood neighborhood of the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, from 1892 to 1970. Sullivan himself, as well as his mother, lived here. Though the limestone facade was saved (though it is kept in storage) it is still an empty lot.

As your architecture obituary queen, I will remember my boy Louis Sullivan, who died on this day (April 14, 1924), with four buildings that should never have been demolished imo. But hey, it’s the Chicago way! (I’d like to add that house built for his brother Albert Sullivan is still an empty lot.)

One interview with a Hungarian I saw indicated he was basically the lesser of two evils and they were holding their noses to vote for him just to get rid of Orban.

How Austin’s stunning drop in rents explains housing in America — Vox Here is one narrative violation in the usual drumbeat of doom that we’re used to hearing about housing in America: The rent, in many cities across the US, is getting cheaper.

Supply and demand strikes again- housing still isn’t the magical exception!

I used AI. It worked. I hated it. I used Claude Code to build a tool I needed. It worked great, but I was miserable. I need to reckon with what it means.

This piece has similar insights about AI in software engineering to those I came to recently when writing my last column. I recommend reading us both. taggart-tech.com/reckoning/ www.stephaniekirmer.com/writing/then...

A free preschool center opening in one of New York City’s wealthiest neighborhoods raises questions about Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s vow to expand universal child care.

yes. they pay more based on income in taxes for the thing that is then “free” for everyone. this is how public services work

This is something that I always wondered about the bizarre anti birthright arguments. How would any of us be citizens then? Would this not invalidate the citizenship of my ancestors, right back into the Mayflower?

People in Oregon say the same thing, anyone they dislike they imagine to be from CA. If half of those that people resented as CA carpetbaggers really were, California would be empty.

Attention to all Chicago & Illinois folks, who submitted Witness Slips against proposed bills for imposing age-based surveillance upon us.

The bastards in the Illinois legislature are forcing us to jump through these hoops *again*, this time for 2 separate bills. See quoted post, & spread the word.

100%. This brings the terror of ICE to people who don’t live in sanctuary cities and have not seen it in their own communities. Now they’ll have personal experience to inflame their loathing of this gestapo.

Also, many Americans have no experience of a walkable community and can’t really envision it. They may not know what life is actually like outside of a car-constrained context, so why would they say they want something they’ve never seen?

Yet another piece of evidence for “murder is illegal in America except when you use a car to do it”.

Turns out building a 100% car dependent nation means you are not resilient in the face of economic, social, medical, or environmental upheavals.

I mean, I’m very glad Melissa Conyears-Ervin lost in IL-7, but LaShawn Ford unironically touts an endorsement from Roland Burris on his website so I’m not exactly thrilled with how things turned out. Anyway, I’ll be spending a lot of time annoying his office staff in the coming years.

PLEASE y'all, file witness slips in opposition of this ILGA bill that would require OPERATING SYSTEM-LEVEL AGE VERIFICATION.

This is a bad bill on privacy and a bad bill on rights and a technical nightmare with terrible implications. There is no implementation of this that would be good.
