Turns out I was giving Polanski too much credit on Ukraine. What the fuck is he talking about here? Putin has an ICC warrant for the industrial kidnapping of tens of thousands of Ukrainian kids & rewarded the soldiers who massacred civillians Bucha with medals for their ‘bravery’

Yes, Swiss scientist Fritz Zwicky coined the term “dark matter” which is impressive, but he also coined the term “spherical bastard” to describe people who are bastards no matter which way you look at them, and I think that should be celebrated more.

One of the things that gives me hope is that we just might come out of this disastrous period with renewed public support for democracy, climate policy, free trade, & international cooperation, as a result of the viscerally repellent, kakistocratic, far right authoritarianism of one Donald J. Trump.

This is happening because one man, who vowed repeatedly to lower food prices on "day one," unilaterally launched us into a costly war that no one wanted. He's causing death, destruction, and chaos in the Middle East and Congress has thus far stood idly by.

Trump's latest budget is the culmination of 40 years of increasing social control in America.

Remember that over half of defense spending flows to private contractors, like the drone manufacturers Trump's sons are now major investors in.

All of this is absurd.

John Roberts Is Always a Republican First In public, the chief justice loves talking about how the Supreme Court’s work is not political. His leaked memos reveal just how political the Supreme Court’s work actually is.

The public's understanding of John Roberts would be much better if the Supreme Court press corps discussed him as a lifelong Republican who has spent his entire legal career working to push the law to the right

New poll: 55% support impeaching Trump Support for impeachment rivals levels during Donald Trump's first presidency, when he was impeached twice, and for impeaching Richard Nixon after the Watergate scandal

Ratf**ked by @davedaley.bsky.social is a great intro to this and how the GOP began aggressively gerrymandering after Obama won in 2008.

@cgpgrey.bsky.social also has a bunch of great videos on the topic of gerrymandering on their YouTube channel.

Is gerrymandering bad in a democracy? Yes! It should be banned.

But while one party is abusing it to try and cling to power, I am all in favour of the other side gerrymandering where they can to counter those effects & remove the incumbents from power.

Because otherwise nothing will ever change.

the conservative reaction to the virginia results remind me quite a bit of their reaction to the 2012 presidential election, where they were offended that democrats ran to win

He's a liar and a killer. I don't know what else to tell people, he's a rich eugenicist, he wants as many poor people as possible to die in the name of 'health.' He's a genuinely and uniquely malign figure in American life and his appointment was an act of violence

Betting the Farm | Diana Kruzman In Ukraine, the corporate consolidation of farmland poses risks—to both small farmers and the sustainability of agriculture.

For Baffler, Diana Kruzman reports on how Ukraine opened farmland sales to corporations in 2024, accelerating a consolidation that's already put a quarter of arable land under large agroholdings, degrading Ukraine's famously fertile soil with industrial monoculture.

Disappointed, though not surprised, I began to describe various life- saving components of USAID’s global health portfolio, highlighting how we prepare for and respond to emerging pandemic threats; support the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV; and immunize millions of children from the deadliest childhood diseases. I spoke for about five minutes, focusing primarily on our infectious diseases work and hoping to keep the attention of people who seemed to have no experience—or interest—in global health.

When I finished, the room was silent, the political appointees looking at one another in what appeared to be disbelief. The silence was broken by Ken Jackson, who chuckled softly and shook his head. “Wow, there really is so much that USAID does that we never knew,” he said. “This is the story that needs to get out there.”

Joel, also smiling, chimed in next, echoing Jackson’s amazement. “I had no idea you did all this,” he said. “As a Republican, when I think of what USAID does in global health, I assumed it was just, you know, abortions.”

Whistleblower says Trump officials thought USAID did 'just abortions,' asked for 'Barney-style' slides before gutting agency, per new book Read an exclusive excerpt from Nicholas Enrich's "Into the Wood Chipper"

NEW—I got an exclusive excerpt from a USAID whistleblower's new book that made me gasp multiple times. It details Trump's dismantling of the humanitarian aid agency & his team/DOGE's shocking ignorance to public health.

'Into the Wood Chipper' by Nicholas Enrich is out tomorrow. Read excerpt here:

It’s kind of astonishing how many news outlets have published versions of a “Tucker Carlson apologized for telling people to support Trump” story by writers who very clearly did not listen to the podcast.

one of the ways the mid to late 20th century political world has distorted the historical memories of even sophisticated observers is in the idea that you can achieve major transformations of american political life through something like bipartisan consensus
