Mahogany, maple, and ebony inset panels, birch, maple and pine blocks
The comfortably angled back and low seat of this chair makes it one of the less rigid seating designs of the 18th century - an ideal chair for lolling, relaxed reclining. An excellent example of the Federal style in Massachusetts, a similar example is thought to have been at Mount Vernon in Vermont, hence it often being referred to as a "Martha Washington" chair. Outstanding features of the style exhibited by this piece include the maple and ebony decorative inset panels and the feeling of lightness created by the sharply raked back legs, tapered front legs, and graceful curved arms.

arms of Steward, son of Lord Blantyre on two sides; bird crest; motto 'Sola Juvant Virtus'; initials AS at sides; flower sprays on sides; chain pattern bands inside rim; white; gilt trim on rim; cornucopia bottom centers
The initials "AS" along with the arms of the Stewart of Blantyre suggest that this punch bowl was made for the Honorable Alexander Stewart, who succeeded as the 10th Lord Blantyre in 1776. His younger brother Charles, who was in the East India Company and later served on the Supreme Council of Bengal, ordered a similar service at the same time.

three men in a chariot at left, with one man stepping in at back; two groomsmen lead two horses pulling chariot; men dressed in various Classical draperies; framed and glazed with glass
Trained as a sculptor by French masters Pajou and Houdin, Thomire became a master in his own right, specializing in ornamental bronze work. This Neoclassical chariot scene, which may have been inspired by the Parthenon Mables, is a wax model for a gilt bronze mount. When cast, the mount would have been applied to decorate a piece of case furniture. It is rare for such a wax model to survive, and even more so for it to be signed by the designer (lower right corner.)

Based on the original sculpture in 1785 by Jean-Antoine-Houdon. Shoulders draped with classical toga; circular pedestal base.
This distinguished bust of President George Washington (1732-99) was created in the 1850s by one of the first great American sculptors, Hiram Powers, who looked for inspiration at a similar bust of Washington done from life in 1785 by the famous French sculptor, John-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828). Here a resolute Washington is portrayed in the popular neoclassical style of the time, draped in a toga giving him the appearance of a noble sage and hero from ancient Greece or Rome. The bust descended in the Drexel family of Philadelphia until 1929 when it was installed in the Foshay Tower, an obelisk in downtown Minneapolis that was modeled after the Washington Monument.
