AFSCME 3299 set to strike next month over health care hike and housing The open-ended strike comes after five separate strikes and as negotiations move into their third year.

“Our members are sleeping in their cars working at UC Berkeley. They’re commuting two hours just to be able to afford to live (and to) afford a two-bedroom because they just cannot live around where all the UCs are.” www.dailycal.org/news/uc/afsc...

🚨Tomorrow, @JudiciaryGOP & @HouseJudiciary hold a hearing on the PRO CODES Act.

As SCOTUS has already ruled: “No one can own the law.”

This bill threatens that precedent by extending copyright to public laws and standards, restricting your right to access the rules we live by. ⚖️🏛️

These delayed charges came about a month before the public announcement that DOJ is “investigating” UCSD School of Medicine. The groypers who staff DOJ enjoy extracting concessions from universities and then attacking them anyway.

A blue and yellow graphic from Unit 18, UC-AFT dated 16 April 2026 titled "Bargaining Update" in large pink outlined text. The graphic lists four bullet points: testimony delivered against layoffs at UC Merced, UCSB and beyond; a proposed new article on technology to protect jobs from AI, data privacy, and classroom autonomy; and proposals received from UCOP on grievance/arbitration (Articles 32 & 33), immigration (Article 34), and discipline/dismissal (Article 30). A circular photo in the bottom right shows people seated at tables during what appears to be a bargaining session. Footer reads "More information @ weteachuc.org" in a pink rounded rectangle.

I always appreciate @matthewsag.bsky.social's clear writing and speaking on copyright and generative AI. From today’s session at the BTLJ-BCLT Spring Symposium: “Are the outputs substantially similar to the inputs? If not, then we need to be thinking of regimes outside of copyright to address it.”

Thousands of UC hospital, service workers plan first open-ended strike across California UC service and patient-care workers plan to walk off the job indefinitely as contract negotiations over wages and housing break down, their union says.

Fighting 'degradation' of UC education: UC-AFT on negotiation proposals - Daily Bruin This story was updated April 13 at 10:37 a.m. Trevor Griffey drives more than 200 miles every week to teach at both UCLA and UC Irvine.

“We all do similar work, but we don’t have any share in governance or decision making at the university – and it’s a shame, because it’s a wealth of knowledge that would be to the benefit of the students.” dailybruin.com/2026/04/12/f...

Court Rules in Favor of Public Access to Information — Association of Research Libraries In a win for information advocates and the public, the US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit ruled that the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM) was unlikely...

"[T]he third circuit upheld the district court’s conclusion that UpCodes’s use is transformative because it 'achieves the distinct objective of making the law freely accessible and educating the public on the contents of binding laws.'"

Right on, third circuit!

“A whole civilization will die tonight” is the most vile thing a US president has ever said, certainly during the post-1945 era when they’ve had the power to kill civilizations with the dropping of a bomb. I’m staring into the darkness. May this not be one of the most fateful days in human history.

Congress Wants To Put The Law Behind A Paywall. Again. Every relevant court that has looked at this question — including the Supreme Court — has agreed: no one can own the law. When private standards get incorporated into binding legal requirements, the public has a right to access them freely. The Fifth Circuit, the DC Circuit, and the First Circuit have all reached the same conclusion through different cases over the past two decades.

We've seen this before, and we're not going away. Fund Libraries, ALA 150, American Library Association.

"We are not surprised that the White House FY27 budget zeroes out funding for IMLS and IAL. The president’s intentions for IMLS were clear last year with the executive order to dismantle IMLS and cut off its funding [...] ALA members have a solid track record of defeating the president’s threats, but we do not underestimate the lengths to which he will go to undercut support for America’s libraries. ALA is working to make sure decisionmakers continue to hear from library advocates.” - ALA President Sam Helmick

NEW: The President once again called to eliminate federal library funding in his federal budget proposal. We have been here before. And when we make our voices heard, we can overcome this again.

I wouldn't expect much vision from this administration but it seems clear that funders will be increasingly pulling out of APC funding without any consideration for what happens next. You won't improve publishing through austerity.
