My sincere condolences.

Thank you for posting this. Years ago, I worked in the Wilbur Cohen Building, & always wondered who painted the New Deal mural at the entrance. Clicking thru, I find it's a Ben Shahn--an artist whose work I know, but I never put it together. Mystery dating back to the 1980's solved!

Dad came home early (which never happened). Our teenage neighbor/babysitter came over so she wouldn't be alone, sat on our steps (with me next to her, feeling helpless), weeping. I was young; I didn't know adults (& I then counted our babysitter as one) could fall apart.

DCPS had an in-service day (or maybe just the afternoon?) so we were out of school. My mom & I were in a small store, buying me shoes & slippers. News came over the store's radio. Salesman started crying. Mom got us home, then went to her room with (she said) a headache. Then...
