Prepare ye the Way I planned to introduce here what I've been learning from early Friends about the Quaker spiritual journey.  In the meantime, a local train accident has reminded me of a series of dreams about trains. I'll share them with you, both to introduce something key about the beginning of Quakerism, and as a way to tell you about my own experience.

Focusing on Dreams I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. -- Joel 2: 28 When I first began paying attention to my dreams, in an effort to better understand myself, my life, and the nature of reality, I had a vivid dream that seemed like a fairy tale.

Dreams have been an important source of guidance in my life for decades. In recent years, I have finally begun to focus on dreams in my writing and teaching. They were an important way that the first Quakers received divine guidance and could be so again today.

Embracing Darkness, Receiving Light Darkness is beautiful and necessary, but the light of the sun is essential, too. It is the source of the energy that powers our bodies and those of all other living things.

On the solstice I'm deeply grateful for both the darkness and the light. And I'm in awe of how the sun continually gives itself away, making all life possible.

Come And Remember Who You Really Are The Extraordinary Experience of Being a Resident Student at Pendle Hill I knew early in my acquaintance with Pendle Hill that I wanted to be a resident student someday. After years attending conferences and other events, I was joyful when the time finally came. My two ten-week terms as a resident student provided the time, space, and loving community in which a great deal of healing happened, emotional and relational as well as spiritual.

When the Healers are Sent Away, the Prophets Must Rise In May 2025, Crozer-Chester Hospital closed, affecting over half a million people and resulting in many job losses. The Crozer 8, a group of advocates, staged a peaceful, prophetic protest to demand justice in healthcare, emphasizing the need for reform against corporate greed. Their actions highlight a broader national crisis in access to essential medical services.

Gathering before the recent court hearing for the Crozer 8 was inspiring. They are fighting for just laws regarding healthcare for all, including the poor and working class.

Drawn Deeper into Forest: the Healing Power of Trees A story of being drawn by a tree, and then a cluster of trees and a remnant of forest to find greater grounding, wholeness, and healing in nature. And hearing the call of nature to preserve our endangered forests.

In our unsteady times, I'm feeling the trees and forests calling me back to my belonging as part of the natural world.

Joanna Macy: A Life Dedicated to Healing the World Joanna Macy, a vibrant teacher and guide, passed away at 96, having profoundly influenced many through The Work That Reconnects. Her life encompassed a journey from exploring Christian ministry to embracing Buddhism and environmental activism, emphasizing the interconnectedness of the living world, and teaching that collectively experiencing our grief for the destruction of living systems can free us to take action on behalf of the world.

We lost a great soul recently, but her teachings live on, having influenced Quakers, environmental activists, and people all over the world.
