Hi lovely people. I am hoping to get some teachers of GCSE American West units to complete a short survey. It will help with my PhD research into pupil metanarratives about Indigenous peoples and C19th US expansion.
You can access the survey here: york.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_...

But it wasn’t just discipline. He taught history in a way that made it vital, and encouraged us to recognise injustices in the past. His teaching helped me fall in love with the American West and so has shaped my life in ways he almost certainly never knew.
Thank you for everything Mr Collinson.
As a boxing coach, Frank did that amazing thing of running a tight classroom. This was huge in a school where classrooms were often chaotic and lessons could easily disappear. He cared about us learning and managed to make people feel like they mattered, even when they were getting a bollocking.
Found out my old history teacher died at the start of Easter. Amazing how the loss of someone you’ve not seen in person for over 25 years can hit you. He is probably the main reason I ended up a history teacher. I still start every PGCE year talking about his impact on my own love for the subject.
Will definitely be sharing once I’m done… though the end is still 4.5 years away!!
Cheers Ali
This survey is specifically for teachers who have taught a GCSE American West unit in the recent past. I have tested it out and I think it should take 14-16 minutes or so.
I am also looking for schools willing to get their pupils to do similar online surveys. Please do get in touch.

Heard this on the news this morning and was absolutely appalled by the reporting. And indeed the discussion of what the “solution” to this might be.
This reporting from BBC stokes division, racism and homophobia, and fails to engage with that reality faced by most LGBTQIA+ individuals. I will be making a formal complaint and hope many others will as well

Disgusting reporting by BBC using a tiny number of cases to suggest widespread abuse of a system which routinely denies LGBTQIA+ individuals asylum and forces them back into environments of persecution. This article massively distorts the reality of the situation. 1/

Which workshop are you most excited about this year? #SHP26
In a way this is perfect as it looks like a completely disfigured and headless Statue of Liberty is emerging from the sunburst behind him.
I'm just gonna say it.....any White person claiming to be an expert on Indigenous peoples is full of bantha poodoo.
Once anyone says they have "studied" Indigenous people, my eyes start rolling and I have to use all my self-control not to immediately kick a shin cuz Bitch, you've learned nothing.
ICE detain 2 elementary students—deport them within 48 hours.
'This week ICE crossed a new alarming line," said lawyer. "Children are being targeted."
They were deported with nothing but the clothes on their backs—to place where they have no home, no belongings, nor resources.
Went to see a fantastic performance of Small Island at Leeds Playhouse tonight. Amazing cast and so well told.
It’s coming to Birmingham and Nottingham next - would thoroughly recommend
The Jetsons lied to us
This was a really fantastic book - powerful story of hope and survival in the face of oppression
Would make a great case study for @teach-envi-history.bsky.social or anyone wanting to broaden out their USA units.

Teacher presentations about how to train AI for the KS1-KS5 history classroom alongside Marnie Hughes-Warrington's keynote. Email d.lyndon-cohen@leedstrinity.ac.uk to register
Aw. Hopefully catch up at another point then. Hope all is well
Thanks Ali. Had to run early, so sorry for that. Are you at HA?

Title is “How do pupils’ metanarratives about Indigenous peoples and
US expansion change and develop through their studies of the
‘American West’ at GCSE?”
Lots of overlap with representations of “the West” and Indigenous peoples in Star Trek.
True. Was thinking of the summary trial in the initial episode and the complete failure to recognise Caleb’s ongoing trauma
I think that whole issue of what we see or hear in something is fascinating. Part of my PhD research in education is exactly that - but to do with Indigenous presence.
Haven’t seen the last 2 episodes yet but figured they’d pull those threads together.
Am constantly amazed how un-trauma-aware the future appears to be
Should also say that I completely agree about how awful some of the backlash has been to this (and other) ST shows. When people make claims that ST was “never woke” it makes me wonder if we watched the same shows as kids!!
