EV credits induce sprawl ποΈ, but net COβ still falls 4.4%. The authors show carbon taxes and EV subsidies are complementary π¨ β carbon pricing internalizes the sprawl externality, nearly tripling welfare gains. π
Line chart comparing percentage changes in utility across different EV subsidy levels. There are three scenarios depicted, the baseline, a carbon tax, and a congestion tax. The figure highlights that combining EV subsidies with carbon pricing yields the greatest welfare gains.
New research in #JAERE shows EV tax credits reduce emissionsπ± and raise welfareβ but not without costs. Using a monocentric city model, the authors show a $7,500 credit increases EV adoption from 22% β 49%, expanding city areaποΈ by ~7% and lengthening commutes.π

Why? Federal mandates solved a coordination problem π€ β small towns lacked the leverage to control upstream pollution on their own. The CWA did it for them.
Two event-study plots of estimated CWA effects on water quality (in Panel A) and population (in Panel B) by year. Panel A plots changes in dissolved oxygen levels (mg/L) over time from 1963 through 1992, showing little change prior to 1972 and steady, positive increases afterward, with most post-1972 estimates statistically above zero. Panel B plots changes in log population by decade from 1930 through 2000, showing flat or negative coefficients before 1970 and modest positive, statistically significant increases after 1970. Both panels include 95% confidence intervals around point estimates and a vertical dashed red line marking the CWAβs passage in 1972.
π§ Clean water mandates are costly, but they can drive local growth! ποΈ
A new #JAERE study finds that the 1972 Clean Water Act tripled resident user fees πΈ β yet surface water quality improved 19% and populations grew 13β30% faster in municipalities under 10,000 people.
