Evaluating MPA success for Caribbean reef fish: the role of design, habitat, and management - Coral Reefs Marine protected areas (MPAs) are essential tools for protecting marine ecosystems; yet, their effectiveness varies across regions. Our new paper out in Coral Reefs today: assessing reef fish biomass in MPAs across 10 Caribbean countries 🐠🌎

By combining reef fish + benthic surveys with MPA manager interviews, we found that enforcement and compliance matter more than MPA size or age for supporting reef fish!

Over half of Australian PhD graduates work outside academia, and less than 0.5% become professors, yet support for this transition is sorely lacking. We need more transparency around academic and non-academic career paths, especially in ecology and conservation where the routes aren't always clear 🔍

We wrapped up with an all-star female panel featuring leaders from government (Maggie Muurmans, DETSI), consulting (Dr Beth Toki, BMT), CSIRO (@laurablamey.bsky.social), and the not-for-profit sector (Dr Mary Bonin, GBRF), who shared their career journeys and offered fantastic advice! 🌟

A very delayed post (life has been busy!), but 3 weeks ago Tania and I ran a @uq-cbcs.bsky.social-funded workshop, "Beyond Academia", to help ecology and conservation HDRs and ECRs explore careers beyond academia. Huge thanks to everyone for the amazing response and enthusiasm! 😍

Queensland environment minister stands by ‘scepticism’ about human-induced climate change Andrew Powell first said he was not ‘100% convinced’ 12 years ago while holding the portfolio during the Campbell Newman era

An environment minister that isn't convinced that climate change is man made and was the only minister in the country to oppose the federal government’s plan for recycling (aimed to improve packaging recyclability and reuce waste)... Just what we need 🫠

There’s insufficient evidence your sunscreen harms coral reefs Despite bans around the world, there’s no empirical evidence sunscreens cause coral bleaching.

If you think switching your brand of sunscreen will prevent coral bleaching, please read this:
