Some hopeful climate news from @chrishatch.bsky.social, ass leaders from 50+ countries gather to plot a path away from fossil fuels.
Some of these countries, like 🇨🇦, are historic fossil fuel producers, but unlike us, are ready to confront some hard truths.

VERY BIG NEWS out of France a week ago:
"French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced on Friday, April 10, a ban on installing gas heating systems "by year's end" in new buildings, including multi-unit housing, to curb France's dependence on fossil fuels."
www.lemonde.fr/en/environme...
"As long as we depend on oil and gas, we will continue to pay the price for other people's wars," the PM stated.
The government also reiterated its aim to install one million heat pumps "made in France" each year by 2030, which would allow heating costs to be "halved."
...With our world on fire, we need to elect more political firefighters.

The Maryland legislature recently passed a big energy omnibus bill that is effectively a huge bag of smaller policies. It's difficult to even summarize -- there's stuff on permitting, plug-in solar, data center, on & on. @jamiedemarco.bsky.social has pulled it all together into a master list:
44% of Americans are very worried about climate change — among the highest levels since 1989 — and 63% believe the US government is not taking enough environmental action, the highest since @Gallup.com started polling the question in 1992.

Who’d have thought a fossil-fuel shill like Trump would be the one to spark a green revolution?

With Prime Minister Carney having secured his coveted majority, and a federal election likely three years away, now may seem an odd time to issue this appeal. But I beg to differ:

Taxing the oil and gas companies’ profits means we can deploy some of those revenues directly helping lower and modest-income households, while using some of the funds to expedite our transition off these deadly fuels.

... Whatever the jurisdiction, it’s vital that there are robust squads of true climate justice champions within the caucuses of multiple parties — people who genuinely get the emergencies we face and will insist on bold action. ...
As the great climate warrior Bill McKibben recently wrote, “What I’ve learned by long observation of the politics around energy and climate: to make real change, it helps immensely to have champions.” ...
