Reviews and syntheses: Carbon vs. cation based MRV of Enhanced Rock Weathering and the issue of soil organic carbon Abstract. We discuss the “monitoring, reporting and verification” (MRV) strategy of Enhanced Weathering (EW) based on carbon accounting and argue that in open systems such as arable land, this approac...

What works in the ocean may not work in soils.
Our new paper shows that total alkalinity titrations—robust in seawater—can be misleading in soils due to organic alkalinity.
We argue that charge-balance & cation-based accounting may be more robust for terrestrial CDR.

Stacked bar chart showing annual counts of Enhanced Weathering publications by sub-discipline. Total output increases strongly over time, reaching 169 publications in 2025, including 85 peer-reviewed terrestrial EW studies and 71 non-peer-reviewed terrestrial EW outputs. Recent years also show contributions from related areas such as rock flour use as fertilizer, mine tailings and waste streams, reactor-based EW approaches, and patents, highlighting both rapid growth and diversification of the field.

Enhanced Weathering publication numbers keep rising exponentially, with especially strong growth in preprints and other non-peer-reviewed outputs — a clear sign of momentum in the field.

Curious how to use soil mass balance to quantify Carbon Dioxide Removal from Enhanced Weathering? Check out our new open-access study including full derivation, sensitivity and signal to noise analyses as well as available Python code and Excel templates: doi.org/10.1021/acs....

More is better 🌍—at least for monitoring enhanced weathering. Our new preprint shows that larger catchments & aggregated soil data cut noise, lower costs, and prevent over-crediting. Crediting must move beyond single fields. See link below.

Agricultural liming in the US is a large CO₂ sink, say researchers Adding lime to agricultural soils can remove CO2 from the atmosphere, rather than cause CO2 emissions, claims new research.

🔖🪨🚜🌧️🌊📉 Thanks to @phys.org.web.brid.gy for this article on @climatejesper.bsky.social's talk yesterday at @goldschmidt-confer.bsky.social on the potential for novel frameworks for the application of agricultural lime to drive durable CDR via enhanced weathering at low cost

Our new paper shows that soil cation exchange can delay CO₂ removal from enhanced weathering by years to decades. Lag varies by soil, climate, and land use—longest in high-CEC regions like the Corn Belt. Big implications for MRV, credit timing, and deployment strategy. Timing matters! 🪨🌾

Check out our new pre-print on how to use soil mass balance (“TiCAT”) to quantify rock dissolution in enhanced weathering trials. Includes key do’s & don’ts, a deep dive into signal-to-noise (constrained in data from from 5 sites), and open-source code to try it yourself. Feedback welcome! #EW #CDR

Excited for #ERW25! If you’re around and want to chat — soil mass balance, aggregated monitoring, or ERW topics — reach out, especially if we haven’t met!
Enjoyed Isometric’s workshop yesterday and getting to discuss how to scale enhanced rock weathering responsibly and quantifying #CDR at scale.

Nuclear Explosions for Large Scale Carbon Sequestration

I think so, yes.

Curious how the comparison would pan out for this banger: arxiv.org/html/2501.06...

Is coral reefs saved per nuclear explosion an acceptable measure? ;-)

Here is another #Bluesky starter pack with scientists who were involved in the @ipcc.bsky.social #AR6 reports (with a likely WGI bias). Please let me know if I missed you!

When I made the ERW starter pack I looked through the relevant people I follow on X hoping I could find them here. Could find less than 20% of X users over here.
Many of them are not very active though, so they might have checked out of social media generally including their X accounts.

ERW Bibliography

The decline in "mine tailings & waste" and "reactor & industrial" publications is probably an artifact as I do not update those lists as thoroughly & primarily focus on ERW.

The complete list can be found here: tinyurl.com/ERWlit
And please add missing entries here: tinyurl.com/ERWmorelit

Another exciting year for enhanced rock weathering science. The number of pre-prints and other non-peer reviewed articles (blog posts, dissertations, etc.) is growing quickly, too.

Really enjoyed co-chairing this session yesterday. Loads of exciting science from how to quantify enhanced weathering in soils, how signals are transported into streams, and processes that may cause CO2 loss in rivers. Thanks to all presenters and attendees for the great session! :)

If you are looking to dive into the academic literature on enhanced rock weathering, I have shared my bibliography online: tinyurl.com/ERWlit

Note the sheets on different sub topics. So many new publications recently... 😮
Will need to update this figure below soon.

Loads of new followers recently, so want introduce myself again. I investigate the potentials and limitations of using natural processes (like the weathering of rocks) to remove more CO2 from the atmosphere, and how we can quantify how well that actually works. That is also what I post about 🙃

I made a starter pack for people and organizations working in enhanced rock weathering #ERW!
Kind of sad how short the list still is, let me know who I have missed. I tried to find the people I follow on Xitter - most are not here yet so convince your buddies come over, too! 🙃
