The hungry red panda at the Prospect Park Zoo? Adorable.

The HungryPanda delivery app scamming small businesses? Not adorable. So they will be paying $580,000 back.

We'll keep pursuing companies that take advantage of New Yorkers, and we'll keep asking if we can pet a red panda just for a second.

but I really believe that development of better and more accessible open-weight models as well as hardware that can run them well should be encouraged so that more people can get their hands on them

I definitely see the argument in relation to closed heavyweight models run by huge companies (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google) because at that point it’s less about the models themselves and more about companies having too much power

this year has been so horrible that if I dropped my iPhone Air in the toilet and flushed it I would no longer be surprised

I dreamed that someone on X surprise-bought me a MacBook Neo (in citrus, obviously) and somehow knew my address to ship it to and also my apartment building had a giant shopping mall on one floor and I didn’t even know how to get back to my apartment without asking someone every time (pic unrelated)

also first with USB-C

it was more of an experimental machine to push the limits of what they could do with the tech they had almost to show off than it was a Real Product

kind of like the Vision Pro in that way where they’re flexing and putting ideas out there more than expecting anyone to buy it

the backlight is just cute to me because I touch-type (hell I use Colemak so the physical keys don’t even correspond to what I’m typing) so it’s entirely irrelevant to me

BUT I can see it being an issue to the less technically inclined which is also who this machine is targeting tbf

nah it launched at a higher price point than the MacBook Air which at the time was still rocking that God-awful non-Retina TN display and the older design language

the 12” was actually the first MacBook to use SF instead of VAG Rounded on the keyboard too

starlight may as well be like. my favourite colour they’ve ever shipped on anything basically

it’s really subtle but it feels like silver with a soul

I want a starlight MacBook Pro SO FUCKING BADLY but alas

phone chip, no 16 GB RAM upgrade because of said phone chip, very slightly lower-res screen without P3 coverage (still overall good), 4K output only, no keyboard backlight, mechanical trackpad instead of Force Touch (but you can click it anywhere)

but it’s still aluminium and feels Nice and Solid

but the Neo, despite being a little smaller than the Air, is built around being cheap first and foremost and just giving you the essential MacBook experience at a much more affordable price (they’ve ALL started at $999 before the Neo, even the “cheap” ones)

so it does make some sacrifices

not really; the 12” was built around being as thin and light as possible at all costs and introduced the butterfly keyboard and Force Touch trackpad (the latter of which all MacBooks use to this day except for the Neo)

if you actually want to torture yourself with GNU/Linux you’re not the target audience anyway like get a Framework or something

the MacBook Neo, for a lot of these people, might be the first MacBook that they CAN comfortably afford, so it’s really important that they know it exists and know it’s for *them* and not their rich CEO uncle

everyone knows that the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro exist so they don’t need to really market those as aggressively, but a lot of people also perceive them as those expensive fancy laptops that they Cannot Afford

the MacBook Neo marketing is really interesting because it’s clearly aiming at the “ugh I wish I could get a MacBook but can’t afford one” demographic
