I don't know if carrying your passport visibly is a good idea or a bad idea at this point. It's very difficult to assess what is likely to be helpful in this situation.

In a rational system, passports would be (near) irrefutable evidence of citizenship. But in a rational system, US citizens wouldn't feel the need to carry them around town and immigration officers wouldn't be executing citizens and dragging people out of vehicles in the street.
