Plus, it kind of ruins the fun of discussing media. Instead of measuring any given media on it's own merits (or lack thereof), a good portion of people will only talk about where x thing fits into the timeline/ how this current iteration betrays the version written 50 years ago.

The retcons, aus, and attempts to break away from that sniffling status quo from the big two, all point towards the limits of trying yo adhere to, or make constant reference to stories that were written more than a decade ago *at least*

I'm beginning to think that continuity, while nice on paper, ultimately limits and ruins fiction. Is that a broad stroke? Yes, but the two biggest examples, this mcu bs, and comics are pretty good displays of that.
