These findings provide a new perspective on the origin of metastatic potential and suggest new avenues for preventing tumor cells from entering this particularly dangerous state (6/7)
Analyses of breast cancer patient samples reveal similar patterns, suggesting that this Prrx1 dependent state may identify tumors at higher risk of forming metastases and refine clinical stratification (5/7)
Cells with intermediate Prrx1 levels are the most competent to form metastases. They maintain invasive behavior while sustaining proliferation after dissemination. In contrast, high Prrx1 levels induce dormancy, and low levels impair dissemination from the primary tumor (4/7)
A central finding is that metastatic capacity is controlled by the transcription factor Prrx1, whose effects depend on its expression levels. Prrx1 determines whether cancer cells remain dormant, fail to disseminate, or reach a state that enables metastatic growth (3/7)

This highlights its specific role in spatial cognition.
The study reveals a previously unknown connection between the two hippocampal hemispheres: neurons from the right CA1 project to the left subiculum, forming a “bridge” essential for spatial orientation and memory-based decisions.
