Don’t make me tap the sign
Top: People complaining that a proposed 18-storey development in Old Montreal would be too big.
Bottom: People complaining about rent increases in older, more affordable neighbourhoods.
These are connected! Blocking new buildings puts pressure on the rest of the housing market.
Shown here: Donald Trump pardoning convicted fraudster in exchange for 1 million in bribe money.
You cannot be pro-immigration and anti-infill housing at the same time. It is an oxymoron. We cannot properly welcome new people - whether from abroad or within - without building affordable places for them to live. The Canadian political class largely fails to understand the scale of our problem.
10/10. No notes.
A planner once explained to me that they couldn't just allow low-rise apartments in Neighbourhoods citywide because the lot fabric in North York is different from downtown so you need different rules. But, like, why is it bad if the lot fabric in North York gradually changes over the next 20 years?
Okay so my editor gave me some space to write the thing. New from me at TVO. www.tvo.org/article/anal...
A quote indicating the urban planners often like to pretend the market for housing doesn't exist.
Quote indicating that planners often care more about implementing their plans that in creating good outcomes.

Trump is the one who surrendered unconditionally.
Doug Ford's "strong mayor powers to build more housing" used to block supportive housing project

Ontario government protects Ontario government by not saying what Ontario government is spending to tell taxpayers how the Ontario government is protecting them.
Toronto: we have a chance to do a thing!
The Antichrist wants you to know he will be committing war crimes.
Wakes up Easter morning.

Mocks an entire religion.

Every GOP with any shred of self respect should resign. It’s past time. If you remain you are choosing to fight on the side of evil.
The Doug Ford government is moving to shield politicians from scrutiny. Here are secrets the new law would have kept under wraps
I am particularly annoyed by Toronto's response on minimum lot size. They say they don't want minimum lot size reform because it could limit the construction of multiplexes. This totally ignores that multiplexes have been far more likely to be built in areas that don't have *any* minimum lot size.
I have long since abandoned any presumption of good faith in cases like this. Toronto is lying about a positive policy change because the utmost priority of city planning is preserving political power — not achieving actual positive outcomes.
Guys don’t laugh. This actually IS thinking two moves ahead.
The more people they charge with fraud the more pardons Trump can sell.
Translated: we have kept our property taxes artificially low via development charges like every other city in Ontario, and now we're facing the consequences for short-term political thinking.
(nb: Kitchener used millions in DC $ to foot a state of the art rec centre the entire region will use)

“The choices are not between market reforms and housing justice, but between an all-of-the-above strategy and one that rejects the best available evidence on housing supply and affordability out of hand.” - @resnikoff.bsky.social
Council needs to take an overall planning approach to consider all the development projects currently either approved or in the planning stages in this neighbourhood. The current low-rise heights in this neighbourhood are reflected in the existing approved official plan. That is why we are opposed to amending the official plan.
When the City does an "overall planning approach" (multiplexes, rooming houses), they often keep change small, saying that anyone who wants to build more can apply for an amendment. But residents view the OP as sacrosanct and amendment applications as an attempt to "break the rules."

Free trade with China ASAP for unlimited cheap EV imports. And immediately start building dense walkable neighborhoods with connected bike lane networks with speed and at scale.
The coming energy crisis is going to get nasty.
One thing we know for sure. Whenever the government of Ontario appoints a housing task force they will definitely and for sure implement said task force’s recommendations.
Other countries need to step up and solve this problem we've created because otherwise we will not help those countries the next time we cause problems for everyone else.
Yes!*
*the municipalities in question didn't have to do development charges, and they're now being paid to stop throttling new housing via taxes.
Improvement? Yes.
Good. Eeeeehhhhhh.
Probably the best option on the table.
