they've changed it so much that you can't even tell any more. how quickly we forget our history.

15) CHUNGKING EXPRESS (4th rewatch)
still one of the best movies of all time. in the past it was tempting to call it dreamlike but that implies a kind of unreality. maybe noticing and falling in love with so many elements of the world just makes your life really feel like that.
Calvin’s dad walks up. “Playing a record? I’ll kill you. I’ll fucking kill you, man.” Calvin is overwhelmed.
it is crazy how every harassment campaign is a result of peoples deep unyielding hatred for women and their intolerance of them expressing a sexuality they do not directly benefit from
the wisdom of the Crystals
"i wanna make a vn but my art is higurashi-like" that is a positive not a negative
going to the bar that sells gimmicky cocktails and ordering the one that comes in a bong and saying "free everyone incarcerated on charges related to marijuana" every time i take a sip so people know im drinking responsibly. and so that the bar frees them
can of "pabst blue ribbon" that has "physically based rendering" written on it
shouldn't have drunk that shit, now everything looks like a ps4 launch title
cultivate bird-forward language. "Im so happy!" -> "im so harpy". Now you are a bird also
Article scanned by the VGHF about Imagic's downfall despite being known for their high game quality, which noted a primary problem is that there were too many copies of games on shelves
This snippet from Videogaming & Computergaming Illustrated describes the real issue with the 83 crash. Nothing about game quality so much as retail stockrooms being so full that they couldn't really get new stuff, and what they did have had to be discounted or sold back to publishers eventually
COURIER: <Speech 80> What if we replace oxygen with swag?
ULYSSES: thought about it. came close a couple times. but it changes you. swag can kill you. swag is a new kind of history.
COURIER: <Science 95> It's basic chemistry. Decay, change, transformation.
ULYSSES: makes no difference to history.
ernest hemingway only got his sad story down to 6 words so comparatively you've knocked it out of the park
games 385 through to 400 are "luner ball 17" through to "luner ball 32"
BONUS ROUND: 10000000 IN 1 UNCHAINED MELODY 95
you will never guess how this unofficial famiclone multicart with the nier replicant remake-ass title manages to fit 10 million games on one cartridge!
14) SONIC ERASER
come for the abrasive but actually good FM synthesised music, stay at least a little longer for the "oh my god i got a combo and then my sonic punched their sonic and now im controlling both sides of the board at once?!"
screenshot of a waterfall with a rainbow, doing the "dither" effect that other sonic games for the mega drive do to achieve transparency on crt monitors
13) SONIC CRACKERS
its interesting playing chaotix immediately after this and seeing how much is missing. its always cool playing prototypes like this.
i really want to see this transparency effect on a crt.

12) YEAH YEAH BEEBISS II
its rly interesting how people have learned to do amazing things with famitracker after many unbroken years of practice, but we dont have that many unbroken years of actually making games for the NES so the gameplay is kinda mid or weird. also its called Yeah Yeah Beebiss 2
There's something a bit poignant about a Bluetooth device failing to connect to another device right next to it when they're the only Bluetooth devices for hundreds of thousands of kilometres around.
11) BINARY LAND
honestly there's a cute idea buried in there, with having to control both penguins at once, but i don't think i can vouch for it until they remake it as Nonbinary Land. actually had anyone done that yet
10) SUPER MARIO BROS.
i played it for literally 2 seconds and i don't get what all the fuss is about.
new tool:
🐈 plano
a small in-browser engine for creating your own flatgames. add images, gifs, and text to make a little collage-like world for a character to walk around in

being closeted is a suffocation you can’t actually conceive the extent of until it relents; shit is still going to be on fire whether you feel like your body is yours or not, whether you’re seen and loved for who you are, the thing is gaining those things after a lifetime of lack feels pretty good.
i think a lot about video game criticism a lot as someone writing from the margins.
i used to feel the importance of writing about visual novels and so on, but i got burned out. now i just write about how much i think they’re cool.
so i resonate with this essay:

9) DRAGON'S HEAVEN
a real pervert movie (not necessarily sexual). you can tell because her shoulderpads are huge, and the appendages, and that they blew basically all of the budget on the animatronic that only shows up in the opening (more than worth it).

8) BUZZ! JUNIOR: MONSTER RUMBLE
kind of fascinating that there's a game you can play with the buzz controllers that isn't a quiz? but idk what else to say about it. i didn't have the ideal experience because my controller was fucked and the retrotink added latency. and the sun was in my eyes
ive spent a lot of time looking at random old games in the last few weeks and me and my friends have started calling this "playing myrient" like its its own game. and fwiw, it is, and its probably more fun than actually playing anything
