I definitely got my adhd from my mother. I took some time to do a few things for my lab while she’s visiting, this then became a race to finish and get off my laptop while she insisted on cleaning every little thing. Now time to go take my high-energy mother and dog on a walk 😅

Two maps of US unemployment rates by county. They are identical except that the legend in the second has been converted into a histogram.

Your map’s legend can be turned into a histogram, helping your audience understand the distribution in addition to decoding the colours.

I regularly think back to a time in class during my master’s program where I didn’t speak up. It’s been 2 years. I’m never making that mistake again.

You’re going to see some news articles saying THOUSANDS of feds are resigning. Um. Ya. We do data. We know what 1% of 3 million looks like. And it's a damn sight smaller than 10%. Keep it up people! As Trump installs his amoral henchmen the American people need us more than ever. Hold the line.

If your research could be affected by such policies, you can use OSF or similar services to post a preprint with a CC-BY license to ensure it is accessible to everyone:

osf.io/preprints

OSF is open source, free-to-use, and maintained by @cos.io a 501(c)3 charity.

Downloaded CDC Data And Where To Find It Journalists and scientists are downloading a bunch of public health data they suspect might be at risk of deletion. Instead of all of us privately reinventing the wheel over and over, what if we share...

If you're a journalist downloading CDC data today, please consider filling out this form so we have a centralized guide to who has what. docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

Hey if anyone is considering backing up any datasets for some reason today, the Open Science Framework has free storage up to 5G/private repository, and up to 50G/public repository.

(The OSF is run by a 501c3 (Center for Open Science), so if you do this you might also consider making a donation.)

Things are moving so diabolically fast! We have at least backed up CDC’s geospatial Social Vulnerability Index layers to Esri’s Living Atlas of the World livingatlas.arcgis.com

The OSF is available for preservation of datasets that need saving.

Finally, please make sure blocking is your last resort. We cannot improve our world by ignoring people we disagree with, it won't change anything. We have to work together, and people learn nothing if they don't see other views they aren't aware of. Report first if its harassment, then block.

A word of caution: When you get to the higher tiers of disagreement, be mindful of whether the disagreeing party is being honest when it comes to counterargument and higher. Sometimes the argument can look like it has the weight of a high-tier disagreement, but it can be as low as Ad hominem.

How to Disagree

There is so much I have to leave out due to character limits but if you want to read the original source you can do so here: www.paulgraham.com/disagree.html

1 year ago 0 0 1 0

Refuting the Central Point. The most powerful disagreement. Here the disagreer interprets your main point, provides a quote, and then explains why the quote and main point are wrong with evidence. Here we can have a conversation where hopefully both parties come to an understanding. (8/8)

1 year ago 0 0 1 0

Refutation. This begins to get to the central point of the argument, but not always. Typically, they quote you and respond to the quote with evidence. This can result in misquoting at times, with the disageer then stooping low to disagree. Good to respond to, but pick your battles. (7/8).

1 year ago 0 0 1 0

Counterargument. This is disagreement with reasoning/evidence. Definitely worth responding to! However, often time the disagreeing party will aim their efforts at something adjacent to the central argument. This can even result in people who agree to have long arguments over nothing (6/8).

1 year ago 0 0 1 0

Contradiction. Finally, we get to responses to the statement itself, although this is the weakest form. Here, the disagreeing party states the opposing opinion without supporting evidence. Sometimes, stating the opposition is enough, but evidence always helps. These can be responded to. (5/8).

1 year ago 0 0 1 0

Responding to tone. Here the disagreeing party will completely ignore the argument and instead respond with something like, "I don't think the way you said it is the best way to go about this." Tone is difficult to gage online. Avoid doing this, and avoid engaging in people who attack tone. (4/8).

Attacking someone's authority or characteristics will not change their mind on their values or their beliefs. Also, if a person does so to you, they don't care what you have to say, they have already decided they don't care what you have to say. Any ad hominem comments should be ignored.

Next, we have, Ad Hominem, and even I can admit I have done this before in previous disagreements. The disagreeing party in this instance attacks the person's authority to speak on this issue or their characteristics. "Of course, he would say that, he's a man," is a perfect example of this. (3/8).

At the bottom, we have Name-Calling, which is exactly as it sounds. Instead of the disagreeing party attacking your central argument, they resort to name-calling and harassment. Anyone like this is not worth responding to. My recommendation: report it, and if it gets worse then block them. (2/8).

The image is of Graham's Hierarchy of Disagreement which is a pyramid with seven sections. Starting from the bottom to the top, the sections are: Name-calling, Ad Hominem, Responding to Tone, Contradiction, Counterargument, Refutation, and Refuting the Central Point.

Given the state of...everything; I wanted to bring attention again to Graham's hierarchy of disagreement. So, while you are having your online debates it's important now more than ever to pick and choose your battles and decide what conversations are worth engaging in. So let's go through them (1/8)
