Nude study for the Disputa by Raphael. Just love that he had to think through all the figures nude even though he would paint them clothed. A true renaissance mind! Today is his day.

The younger man in a white hat is, supposedly, the cardinal from the previous piece. I may be wrong of course.

It is a cardinal's mantle. My Prado catalogue says it may be Ippolito d'Este, among other people.

I sometimes wonder if the reason I avoid (to my shame) studying Raphael in favour of other Great Masters is a superstitious fear of hexing myself : he did die young. Same with Correggio, who had an ineffably tragic fate.

Van Dyck to Rubens is very much like Aristotle to Plato - vapid and may I venture to add: deformative! A talent that paves over the intellectual essence of his master's work.
