New Yorkers, the law is clear: if you have an EBT balance, a store that accepts SNAP must allow you to use your card.

Follow these instructions and file a complaint with my office if you are denied: ag.ny.gov/consumer-complaint

It fosters creativity by enabling a reader to become completely immersed in other imaginary worlds and by giving them the ability to experience different perspectives outside of their own. It also acts as a universal space for all to see themselves reflected in characters that they identify with.

Now my most favorite lines are "thank you/gracias for surrendering the past tense/ of
your life so that I might conjugate myself here/in the present of this country" (lines 29-31). Those
are words I wish to tell my parents one day due to them giving up their life in Mexico to be able
to create my life here in the US. They gave me more than what they ever had growing up and I
will always be forever grateful.

Grateful to @poetrichardblanco.bsky.social for “My Father in English.”

As a Texas teacher in 2025, exposing students to stories of folks who made sacrifices that will impact generations of their family feels especially important.

Nikki Giovanni: the New book cover

Nikki Giovanni: the New book cover

I feel like I’ve been drowning lately; there are fewer and fewer pockets of air.

So when @msespo.bsky.social asked if she could send me this book, I was touched and grateful. Both Christine and Nikki Giovanni are pockets of air. 💛

In the feedback on my most recent grad school assignment, my professor said, “your voice is clear; I hear your heart and passion,” and referred to me as an “emerging doctoral scholar.”

Nobody can tell me anything for the next 7-10 business days.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

To Jamyla Bolden of Ferguson, Missouri
Naomi Shihab Nye
1 Fifty years before you did your homework in Ferguson
2 we did our homework in Ferguson, thinking life was fair.
3 If we didn't do our homework we might get a U— Unsatisfactory.
4 Your dad says you didn't even get to see the rest of the world yet.
5 I've seen too much of the world and don't know
6 how to absorb this-a girl shot through a wall—U! U! U!
7 I'd give you some of my years if I could-you should not
8 have died that night-there was absolutely no reason
9 for you to die. I'd like to be standing in a sprinkler with you,
10 the way we used to do, kids before air conditioning,
11 safe with our friends in the drenching of cool,
12 safe with our shrieks and summer shorts and happy hair,
13 where can we go without thinking of you now?
14 Did you know there was a time Ferguson was all a farm?
15 It fed St. Louis...giant meadows of corn, sweet potatoes, 16 laden blackberry bushes, perfect tomatoes in crates, 17 and everything was shovels and hoes, and each life,
18 even the little tendril of a vine, mattered,
19 and you did your homework and got an S for Satisfactory,
20 Super, instead of the S of Sorrow now stamped on our hands.
Lines 14-18 highlighted

The first times I read this poem, I paid little attention to the description of Ferguson. The last few years; I’ve been thinking about planting seeds and what grows when you do. Ferguson is a space that cultivates life & growth, & also death + violence.

It’s the juxtaposition, man.

When I teach this poem, it’s always really visceral, the juxtaposition between innocence, rural ease, and carefree life and death and destruction. My students talk about how they feel like they’re always once second away from the end of their childhood.
