That seems very possible. I was in the Shenandoah Valley last week and the TV ads were at least 3-to-1 No. Some ad breaks had three referendum ads in a row. One of the No ads used past statements against gerrymandering from Obama et al to target Dems.

I would submit that a gerrymander by politicians saying fuck the voters and one by voters saying fuck the politicians are two wholly different animals

Memo to this horrid person: contract rights are not the only rights your writers have.

Also: law is not the only remedy they may have either.

But so much for McClatchy as a credible press organization to even THINK this was a good idea.

They may own the rights to the articles but not to the writers’ NAMES. Not being able to remove your name from a byline if there’s been an editorial issue or whatever is fundamentally different than your employer attributing things to you that you didn’t do.

First reaction: JFC, *McClatchy* is doing this?

Ah. Bought in bankruptcy by a hedge fund in 2020.

I’ve had the same editor since 1967. Many times he has said to me over the years or asked me, Why would you use a semicolon instead of a colon? And many times over the years I have said to him things like: I will never speak to you again. Forever. Goodbye. That is it. Thank you very much. And I leave. Then I read the piece and I think of his suggestions. I send him a telegram that says, OK, so you’re right. So what? Don’t ever mention this to me again. If you do, I will never speak to you again

Also, someday, society will decide relying on noblesse oblige is not a winning strategy.

I’m too far behind them to intervene in any way that doesn’t involve bellowing but I’m damned close.

Why would a movie with this poster be good? Why would a Chris Pine movie be good? Why would a Dungeons & Dragons movie be good? Zero of this makes sense. It walks up a vertical obsidian wall while you can only stare and wonder how it was done

I find this line of reasoning SO common - everyone thinks there's a line and that you can just fill out a paper, get in that line, and then one day you'll (magically) have a green card. But there's no form, no line, and no path to a green card at all for most people like this.

Very much not trying to call out this specific person so PLEASE do not pile on, but this is a good example of how this very common false belief that people can get status if they try hard enough often leads to a kind of presumption that if someone HASN'T gotten status, they are somehow at fault.

She was granted withholding of removal from India *decades* ago, and had been living and working legally (including for the U.S. government!) ever since.

But with third country removals now a real option, TSA shared her data with ICE and they arrested her at the airport on her way to a job.

Just occurred to me that a bet between friends keeps the money within the group. The worst case scenario is that you're giving your buddy some cash.

Men who would have made small bets with each other, strengthening male bonding with that characteristic mix of competition and cooperation, now feed an extractive addiction machine that makes the rich richer while destroying human bonds. No problem here!

It is unbelievable how completely surrounded young men are in their information environment by the messaging around gambling. It's pretty much constant during every waking hour.

Same. I’m a 40-something woman with no consumer behaviors that would suggest I’m a good target, and it’s constant. Can’t imagine what it’s like for the prime audience.
