It's a great episode, and @amycardinal.bsky.social also has her own podcast called Good Fire. It's made me think about Indigenous land stewardship a lot more.

🔥 Dr. @amycardinal.bsky.social presented at the Senators for Climate Solutions session on Sept 25, 2024, exploring solutions to the challenges of intensifying wildfires. She highlighted the impact on Indigenous communities and the role of fire stewardship in sustainable forest management.

It’s also missing the point that it’s not only about wildfire risk reduction, but living daily in healthy landscapes that are properly stewarded

Why am I making this point? Because as usual, the discussion over "letting people live in high fire risk areas" has begun. It's my job to point out that people have lived here for millennia, and because they knew the fire risk, they managed the fuel. Limited fuel = limited fire.

I'm in Pasadena, smelling the #EatonFire. I activated the group text for a disaster group that planned together last year, checking in, seeing if anyone needs help. One person has been evacuated and needed help. We all felt better for doing something. Helping neighbors is the most powerful response.

With the Eaton and Palisades Fires destroying likely hundreds of homes, a reminder that SoCal's worst firestorms involve multiple fires stretching resources thin. If you live anywhere near these fires (or any new ones), DO NOT WAIT for someone to knock/tell you to leave. Be Prepared and Go Early!
