🔥HOT OFF THE PRESS: Why the energy transition is disruptive, non-linear, hard to predict and often faster than expected.
Our paper in Nature Reviews Clean Technology shows how feedback loops create virtuous and vicious cycles that can accelerate or block change. 🧵

I did my first 5k! and it was a hill run! I did end up jogging + walking and was really slow, but happy to reach the finish line 💪 and excited to do more now!!
Happy to say that exam season concluded successfully with good grades!
Unfortunately the late night snacking, coffee & decline in the no of runs over the last month or so wasn't the best wrt fitness, so i have jumped headlong into a virtual 10k and a 5k (hill run😅), my calves complain lol

This idea of "thin empathy" and "thick empathy" from @mjcrockett.bsky.social is lighting up my brain this morning. It's an intriguing model. We've built a world where chances for thin empathy abound, but thick empathy remains hard to come by.
I need to read that preprint today.
Title, authors’ names, abstract, and keywords from a paper about the decline of democracy and implications for marine fisheries
#Fisheries are a key contributor to global food security. @brianpentz.bsky.social & @philiploring.com ask what are the impacts of democratic decline on marine fisheries, eg, on governance, & policy & suggest democratic decline is a major challenge to fisheries #sustainability doi.org/10.1111/faf....
as exam season nears its end, i glance at the calluses (literally, literally) on my fingers from answering 3 hour papers and replenish my pen set for the final stretch, i began with 6, used up 2 and lost 2, so par for the course lol.
Get your typing fingers nimble, the #ATmosphereConf call for proposals is open!

We show LLMs demonstrate "algorithmic othering"--e.g., disproportionately foreground racial markers, overproduce culturally coded language.

Title, authors’ names, abstract, and keywords from a paper about co-creation of a sustainability index for small-scale fisheries
In small-scale #fisheries it is "crucial" to develop participatory approaches to inform management. Ayarza et al. describe a process with Spanish fishing guilds to co-create a sustainability index & note the importance of #trust, knowledge integration, & collective reflection doi.org/10.1093/ices...
Multidecadal Management Ensures High Sustainability and Low Risk in a Global Shark Biodiversity Hotspot doi.org/10.1111/faf....
"The current fishing sustainability risk for most species is low, with previously overfished stocks recovered or recovering to sustainable levels "

The rich are responsible for an outsized share of carbon emissions — the top 10% account for 48%.
And the gap is growing.
Since 1990, the richest 1% have increased their share of emissions by 13%, while the poorest 50% have seen theirs fall by 3%.

"Police focus on ladder placed against the side of the Louvre"
I spend a year plotting a mystery novel and then this happens.
Building a research project is a lot like assembling furniture without all the instructions—you lean on method, peer advice, and a bit of improvisation. Patience and collaboration keep the pieces together. 🔧🤔 #PhDLife #ItzikThoughtLoop
You’re not doing this alone.
Even if it feels like it. There’s a whole quiet army of #PhD students out there — just like you.

💯, after uninstalling and reinstalling the MS word plugin for Mendeley more times than a person should have to, at an hour past midnight, Zotero was my knight in shining armor 😂

1. Bluesky doesn’t downrank links
2. You can choose your own algorithm from among thousands
3. The whole app is open source
This keeps it a free and open platform by design, leading to better click-throughs and traffic to your site.
We 💙 the open web.
Landslide risks aren’t one-size-fits-all. In restored forests, failures spread wide; in native forests, slides run long and may turn to debris flows. Geology, soils, and vegetation together dictate hazards and prevention. 🌐🧪
Signed up for a 5k run in November... gotta up my game in october 💪
(its a hill run at that :D but the route is going to be very scenic, with lots of nature + historical monuments on the way)
i kinda like #examseason ... as it's a period of time when priorities focus around revising the syllabus and giving those exams, so its peaceful in its own way :D
