Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this yearโ€˜s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Trailblazers: Chemists with disabilities rethink how we do science C&ENโ€™s 2025 Trailblazers issue, curated by guest editor Mona Minkara, looks at how chemists can solve problems in new ways

It so was hard to imagine having successful career in science as a disabled PhD student that eventually I just left.

Who could have guessed that years later I would help create a magazine issue dedicated to highlighting Trailblazing disabled chemists!

โ€˜Almost unimaginableโ€™: these ants are different species but share a mother Ant queens of one species clone ants of another to create hybrid workers that do their bidding.

A common type of ant in Europe breaks a fundamental rule in biology: its queens can produce male offspring that are a whole different species

This is unfortunate, leading to intense financial stress (the most consuming stress IMO). Sure, my generation (Gen X) is also struggling compared to our parents' generation. However, new graduates (class of 2026 and beyond) are in for a very challenging life post higher ed.

I need to update my presentation on how to prepare fellowship applications for graduate students and postdocs. Any advice you think should be in there, beyond "read and follow the instructions"? I promise I'll cite my sources. Memes are welcome. Please share in your academic circles.

This is one of the most stunning crinoids in my collection. Gennaeocrinus mourantae from the Devonian Arkona Fm. of Ontario. A large pocket of these were found decades ago and very few have been found since.

Beautiful song. I love his unique fluid-like style. The notes seem to blend together so smoothly and thatโ€™s tough to do on a trumpet. Thanks for sharing.
