like maybe this isn't the original intent of the term toxic masculinity but it does provide an easy in for people to assert that feminism is actually all about reclaiming masculinity "but good this time" as if society at large does not already favor masculinity. you know?

like we're just still doing gender norms where we associate masculinity and femininity with specific traits and slapping the word "positive" in front of it

the part that really bothers me is how much people attempt to separate masculinity into "toxic" and "positive" versions, as if there's this magical version of masculine values that does not in some way reinforce patriarchal norms

getting someone to lash out is often the goal of a harassment campaign. like you can openly browse a doxxing forum and encourage people to stalk someone but because she said kys once, you can claim that you're the one being harassed and threatened actually (which justifies further stalking)

maybe a controversial take but telling someone they should die or kill themself is nowhere near as harmful as taking part in a harassment campaign against them

it would've been easier to make the bakery lady explicitly exploitative and make kiki's self respect some kind of rebellion against her but no, the bakery lady is also nice to her and respects that she needs time off

kiki is so fucking good because she has to learn self-respect in spite of the fact that people around her are already nice and supportive all the time. she constantly undervalues her own time and her efforts and her craft in spite of the fact people already like her and value her

the legacy of totoro and kiki's delivery service is that they're these comfy no-context fluffy movies but they're actually youth lib propaganda where the kids have to learn hard lessons despite the world being nice to them, it's brilliant

i think i kinda resented ghibli movies for a while the same way i did any disney movies but now i can clearly see that they're genuinely excellent films with lots of fans that just do not understand them. curse of popularity i guess
