"The greatness of our justice system comes from fairness, equality and liberty before guilt is proven. Mr. Trump’s executive orders only move us further away from those goals — and thousands of Americans will pay the price."

A powerful op-ed from @jeremycherson.bsky.social & David Gaspar of @bailproject.org makes it crystal clear — bail reform makes us all safer and it's a step backward to repeal these advances. The article links to several excellent recent studies of these reforms.

Let’s be clear: there is no credible evidence linking bail reform to rising crime.Bail reform isn’t radical—it’s practical, evidence-based, and effective. And when implemented thoughtfully, it enhances public safety while protecting the presumption of innocence.

We built this report hoping to offer a clearer, more grounded resource so that all who are interested can understand the truth about bail reform, and equip themselves with the knowledge of the many ways in which the pretrial system can be reformed and unnecessary incarceration can be avoided.
Bail reform is alive and well. Our report documents 36 examples of jurisdictions passing meaningful reform since 2000. We even identified thirteen examples of reform passing between 2020 and 2023, and already have new examples from this year to add in our first update.
Very excited to share The Bail Project's newest report -- Beyond Bail: A National Survey of Pretrial Justice Reform.

Bail reform has benefited tens of thousands of people, but we almost never hear their success stories. Read @brycecovert.bsky.social's 2022 story on the challenges of uplifting these narratives and the effect of the media's fixation on negative outliers.
Here is the part NOBODY ever gets about bail reform:
Pretrial incarceration causes MORE CRIME than cash bail prevents
WHY?
Because arrest and pretrial incarceration put people in crisis, even when they are innocent they lose jobs, and can't support their families...it creates massive insecurity
