Ironically, we have spent the last year trying to find a new source of funding to continue investing in RLOs. But the funding landscape as a whole seems to be investing significantly less in refugee work, and that trend looks set to continue and get worse as we move into 2026.
At MobLab we had the pleasure of working with leaders of 277 RLOs - building a network and co-creating a campaign to push funders to prioritise RLOs. “Nothing about us without us” encapsulates what those refugee leaders wanted to see from refugee advocacy and humanitarian work.
The work these refugee led organisations does is vital. These are refugee communities coming together to make their lives and their communities stronger. From working with youth to plant trees and combat climate change within their camps to campaigning for better education for women and girls.
Refugees living + organising from camps have seen funding for their orgs cut almost completely, many of them losing funding overnight.
New research from ODI shows that just $49 million reached RLOs in ‘24. Refugee leaders have been left behind by funders.

Today, members of @50501newyork.bsky.social , @wgaeast.bsky.social, and Get Free’s Project Fulcrum rallied in front of the Nexstar’s corporate office in NYC to demand they free the airwaves, show Jimmy Kimmel, and refuse to comply with future regime attacks on truth and freedom.
"We saw an opportunity in the final season of 'Andor' and now many more people across races, backgrounds and genders have joined our ranks for truth and reparations — and have already dealt major blows to the MAGA regime’s agenda."

Nonprofits are returning to #PovertyPorn imagery by turning to AI generated imagery of Black and Brown bodies suffering. This is as much a failure of funders cutting budgets as it is a failure of leaders uplifting and resourcing organisations in the global south.

Madagascar has faced repeated social crises primarily due to frequent power and water cuts. These circumstances have been a source of frustration, sparking fresh protests in the country in September 2025.
Grassroots protest movements have always looked to popular culture for symbolism, and the flag of a pirate crew that liberates oppressed peoples against all odds and stands against powerful leaders has resonated broadly with many in Gen Z protest movements.
