It's Dave Ridgway week here at Canadian Football History, marking 30 years since the man they called "Robokicker" retired. Here's an account in the Regina Leader-Post from the Roughriders' training camp in 1982 about newcomer Ridgeway earning praise from head coach Joe Faragalli. #cfl #riders

Signed by The Queen, too. Hopefully the Governor General and the provincial Lieutenant Governors get on Gander. If "official" Canadian accounts have a Gander presence (which I think they will) it will do wonders for the platform and the AT Protocol.

It was so much fun. I used to spend countless hours surfing websites on Geocities.

This week, Bluesky quietly surpassed X in referral traffic to my football blog. Here's the thing. The blog is by shared by accounts with hundreds of followers on BS vs accounts with tens of thousands of followers on X. That tells me everything I need to know about where to build my audience. Not X.

It was the first Grey Cup I remember watching. I wasn't a huge football fan at the time but obviously wanted Hamilton to win. It was a somber Monday back at school the next day. Have watched the game numerous times since. What a game!

Canadian Press article on ORFU outlook in 1948

Canadian Press article on ORFU outlook in 1948

In 1948, when the Hamilton Wildcats left the Ontario Rugby Football Union for the Big Four, it could've been the death knell for the ORFU. Reduced to just three teams, the country's oldest football league was in trouble. Then, the Hamilton Tigers took the Wildcats' place. The ORFU carried on.

I am pretty confident that under a Westminster system of government (parliamentary democracy with a constitutional monarchy) a Trump-like politician would've been taken care of ages ago. No prime minister or government would survive if they behaved like he does. Period.

Five teams in the Big Four? Not an April Fool's joke. In 1948 the Hamilton Tigers quit the IRFU, setting off a dramatic chain of events that would find the IRFU in the embarrassing position of inadvertently having two Hamilton teams in the league.

IMHO a significant factor is the CFL's failure to diversify its fanbase. There's been some modest attempts recently, I suppose, but not reaching out to newcomers is a missed opportunity especially in the big cities such as Toronto. It's a big investment but will pay off long-term.
