Dismantling Voice of America was one of the most devastating things I’ve witnessed. VOA wasn’t propaganda, it was proof that free press could criticize its own leaders and still survive. And now we’re throwing away one of our greatest tools of freedom.

I have a similar memory, Laura, but it was our housekeeper/babysitter, Mary Jane, doing the ironing while watching "Days of Our Lives." The smell must have been from the starch.

I just finished reading "Charm City!" I've become obsessed with Tess, moved on to "Butcher's Hill." I started my Laura Lippman exploration with "Murder Takes a Vacation," then randomly chose "No Good Deeds" followed by "Hush, Hush" before going back to "Baltimore Blues" to find out more!

I'm enjoying the diabolical Willow! Eventually someone will figure out what she is up to, someone besides Trina and Kai that is! And I look forward to that. In the meantime, Nina is going to be in a world of hurt from the way she let her darling long lost daughter set her up!

Illiberalism Is Not Inevitable If Viktor Orbán can lose, then his Russian and American admirers can lose too.

"Magyar and his team fought back on the ground. Knowing he could not win if he stuck to Budapest and other large cities, Magyar has been traveling the country since 2024, visiting small towns and villages, many more than once."

Hungary's far-right leader, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, is facing his biggest challenge in 16 years.

Orbán "is so far behind in the polls that even his rigged election system will probably not save him this time, and it's causing some panic in the right wing," says @kimlanelaw.bsky.social.

U.S. Pushes Allies to Chase a New Terrorism Target: The Far Left

The United States was as concerned as always about Islamist terrorism, said Monica A. Jacobsen, but, she told her counterparts from Europe, Canada and Australia, the Trump administration also wanted more attention on what it believed was an insidious, underestimated threat: the far left.

Protesting is Necessary but Not Sufficient Now comes the hard part, especially for lawyers.

No Kings was historic, but two attorneys explain the part nobody talks about.

Protests succeed in reversing authoritarian trends only when paired with sustained collective action:
Strikes, boycotts, deliberate non-cooperation with illegitimate exercises of power, and the patient work of organizing across every sector of civil society.
Bring on the Boycotts!

Pete Hegseth sent U.S. troops to fight and die in Iran. Was he trying to cash in on the war behind closed doors?

This would be a massive betrayal.

I’m pressing for a full investigation NOW.

Detained by ICE, he missed multiple cancer treatments. Now he’s in hospice. Some immigrants with chronic health problems were swept up by ICE in Minnesota, leading to missed medications and, for one man, missed chemotherapy sessions.

"In immigration detention, he missed 4 out of 5 chemotherapy sessions scheduled in his fight against aggressive lymphoma.

A scan last month showed the cancer had spread into his bone marrow.

“I was in shock, seeing those little dots,” he said of the scan...”

ModPo changed my life too, Laura. Returning to the same poems over and over again is part of the magic. The wonderful people we grow to know as we read the same poems again and again is the other part. Poetry makes me happy.
