Democracy and Social Ethics is actually pretty easy to break up. I like "The Subjective Necessity of Social Settlements" too.

I think the notion of "limited cognitive resources" has been expanded too far and to our detriment. "Cognitive resources" includes a lot of things. Not all of them are not like a water reservoir where the boundaries are fixed. We can enlarge them. We appeal to limitation to justify being lazy.

Every time a platform updates its look, it's worse. Why is it always worse?

The problem with getting Sour Patch Kids is that you want more Sour Patch Kids.

Right after 9/11 a version of Count of Monte Cristo came out, but because everyone was convinced that the entire country was suffering too much trauma, they changed the ending to a happy one.

The Emotions Behind AI Even experts disagree about the impacts AI will have on our lives. The debate has less to do with how the technology works and more to do with how we feel about it.

I wrote about how AI discourse is mostly about feelings. Come for the Rorschach test, stay for the 17th century microscope debate

Just to be clear: Kristi is a dear friend of mine. But, if you honestly think that you know everything there is to know about the A&M situation, God help you. You've never been department chair.

Just a quick reminder to all the undergrads out there: your former professors love hearing from you! I heard from two of my alumni today and I just love it.

"Do you have time to....?"
No. I'm chair. I don't have time to do anything. I have negative time. I'm in time debt.

Screenshot of David Simon interview
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

The only correct take on a fundamentally anti-human technology.

Can conversing with AI cause delusions and psychosis? A spate of shocking breakdowns and even deaths involving AI chatbots is fuelling panic over ‘AI psychosis’ and new safety features. It’s not quite that simple, say experts

The Standard interviewed me about people being driven insane by ChatGPT. This is my new thing.

Why Are We Looking for a Friend in ChatGPT? OpenAI added new mental health guardrails to the latest ChatGPT model, yet users demanded the friendly version back. People want the convenience of a friend without the work.

After ChatGPT users demanded to have the "friendly" version reinstated, I decided it was time to think a little bit about why we're looking for friendship in a chatbot in the first place

We have a communal pot, bought with department discretionary funds. We can buy coffee as an office supply, but sometimes people bring in a bag to share. The coffee drinkers take turns making pots. It's a good system.
