Effective May 5, 2025, NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) will decommission its snow and ice data products from the Coasts, Oceans, and Geophysics Science Division (COGS). As a result, the level of services for affected products below will be reduced to Basic—meaning they will remain accessible but may not be actively maintained, updated, or fully supported. This includes Sea Ice Index, Snow Data Assimilation System (SNODAS) Data Products, Glacier Photograph Collection, U.S. National Ice Center Arctic Sea Ice Charts and Climatologies in Gridded Format Gridded Monthly Sea Ice Extent and Concentration, 1850 Onward World Glacier Inventory. If you rely on these products in your work, research, education, or planning, we invite you to share your story at nsidc@nsidc.org. Your input can help us demonstrate the importance of these data sets and advocate for future support.

This is horrible. I don't even know what to say. Some of our most key polar data.

Federal employees need to hear from Democratic members of Congress and from civil society that they will be defended for obeying Congress's orders and the Constitution when the order comes from Trump to break their oaths and violate the law.

Writers have a saying that if you really love a sentence you wrote, you should delete it. Only the author really loves it.

Free atmosphere -- you burn the gasoline and populate the free atmosphere with the resultant CO2 at 425 ppm, with the atmosphere having been initially CO2-free. (trying to keep it simple)

Your take on the NCSE's 'Project Steve'?

Question from Friday's classroom visit about removing CO2 from the atmosphere. I'll ask a variant for the more highly educated crowd here:

What is the volume ratio between, e.g., 1 kg gasoline and the CO2 you get by burning it in the atmosphere at 425 ppm?

This has been studied -- people estimate percentages to be towards 50%. If the actual number is tiny, it produces a gross overestimate. If the actual number is near 100%, it produces a gross under-estimate.

Similar distortions occur for estimating % over 6' tall, iirc

Thing was, our mother (not a scientist) raised us with the essentials for being a scientist -- an interest in learning more about the world, and a willingness to update what we think is true based on evidence.

Friday I took part in the Great American Teach In. Amusing to me: the teacher (jr high science) was my sister, the other guests were my other sister (nutrition) and my niece (recent PhD in computational evolution). No, being a scientist or science educator was not a family requirement. 1/2

First one I used was a Wang 8k -- 8192 bytes of ram with about 1800 of it taken up by the system. 5.25 inch floppy disk storing over 100,000 bytes! Who could use all that space !?

More seriously, I also wrote my first AIML program on it -- it learned to play '21 sticks'.

That isn't pessimistic so much as depression. Pointless, 'doesn't matter what I do', 'why bother' and many other common phrases in political discourse, are classic depressive statements.

Recently did my first talk to a non-specialist audience since Covid. I still like doing so. What made this one particularly fun was an engaged audience with lots of questions.

If you're looking, or know someone who is looking, for a scientist to talk weather and/or climate, I'm often available.
