When we talk about whether something or (ugh) someone is "technical"

do we actually mean "computational"?

Thank you, I’m so glad!

@ashley.rolfmore.com with a true banger of a talk on how exposing errors and uncertainty to users turns them into collaborators on your system

Deep gratitude to this crew for the chance to talk my book in this kind, insightful space

Exactly! because people can care about all sorts of things, but the addition offers alignment

Love this direction! Yes, adding "for people who care about their users and the web" is smart, sets the table with a human-centered frame

Blue recycling bin on a city street in Limoges. It is overflowing with metallic plastic decorations, some bits have fallen to the ground and there are wet stains around them. It's still cheerful blue, the tinsel is garish & glittering, but the paint is peeling on the shutter behind it and it is clearly feeling unwell after a night of excess.

It's early on a cold, sunny Saturday morning, and I have a contribution to the "can an AI be conscious and have feelings?" debate:

the strong empathy I have for this recycling bin that partied too hard last night, and is undebatably conscious of that fact right now

@jay.myatproto.social @grimalkina.bsky.social Like Christmas morning 🥹

What helped you realize this could be a jumping off point for teaching each other? Because it’s so nice to see someone make this connection

No one paved a path for me into tech, so I got to watch the paths other people took, learning how chaotic and emergent they actually were

This, it turns out, is why the complexity of large technical ecosystems is pretty comfortable for me

Great day for going ham on my drum machine

Okay but now that we've made computing systems that can make clusters of words and simulate human reasoning, what are we as humans doing to stay grounded and sane through this? 🤔

Because dawg

we like to think we're pure cognition but our human reality is also physical, emotional, and biological

This one was such a treat

I've been adamant for years that yes, there may be defaults to how LLM-powered tools are designed, but we don't have to accept the wrong constraints

We can McGyver these things into shapes that serve human-centered goals

the reality that your users have an inner world and your product's impact on it influences your success is hella inconvenient so

But every codebase is still a commons where the resource of attention needs to be negotiated

That being flipped over from “this is tenuously sorta held together” to “our shared reality is in shambles” is going to create some difficult emotions

I say this as someone who’s benefited enormously from Claude Code. I’m not anti-agent coding by any stretch

And IMO the code was always an approximation of what matters, not the thing itself
