I am getting a lot of questions about whether Trump's threats alone are illegal. The answer is yes.

1. First, Additional Protocol I states “Acts or threats of violence the primary purpose of which is to spread terror among the civilian population are prohibited.” (also DOD LOW Manual §5.2.2)

I think Tuesday we get to find out whether the chairman of the joint chiefs, the CENTCOM commander and others are willing to carry out illegal orders.

Of course, this is the US, so when it comes to taxes and legal advice, most folks will say “I am not a lawyer” but it’s hard not to see that as an institutional CYA approach that leaves international grad students left to their devices, resources and networks (which furthers existing inequalities)

Lots of grad students, especially those who are in the US on student visas, feel genuinely anxious about traveling abroad for conferences, fieldwork or, god forbid, family visits. I am not seeing a huge outpouring of assurances/legal assistance from US institutions and/or APSA in this regard.

You might have primed your respondents there :) mine would be “more spine and public-facing advocacy and peer support”

This here, is an excellent argument for the US model of liberal arts colleges; sadly, many of these institutions currently struggle with declining enrollment and dwindling financing.

This is no different from Putin saying MH17 was shot down by Ukraine or Assad saying rebels gassed themselves.

In the spirit of Olympics, a new discipline, US policy-thlon, or covering the following issues in the span of ~10 minutes for Czech public TV: SCOTUS tariff ruling, US-Iran negotiations, Mar-a-Lago shooting and the “offer” of US hospital ship to Greenland. Truly a spinning wheel of topics there..

“We are taking a sign out of the window”

Brilliant speech by Carney and brilliant use of Havel’s Power of the Powerless to outline a bold vision for a new, post-Trumpian world order.

US universities must reject Trump’s ‘compact’. It is full of traps | Jan-Werner Müller The administration is trying to make nine universities an offer they seemingly cannot refuse

"Precisely because they have been losing court cases over free speech and visas for foreign students, Trumpists now seek to entrap universities in a deal that effectively removes the protections of federal law and gives the administration arbitrary power over them."

Hot takes on Czech elections:
1/ the outcomes were driven by voter mobilisation in economic peripheries which are ANO strongholds. Pre-election polls suggested that ANO is able to mobilise their voters from 2017 who abstained in 2021 and also non-voters from 2021.

Do you/we have comparative data for post-communist researchers in leading anglophone journals?

Thoughts on how much of this could be explained by English skills? Seems like the first barrier to any type of publication for non-native speakers and scholars

Yeah, many are way too short still - I think the EU has a minimum threshold of 5 seconds but those can still be short especially on busy intersections around VSE where ISPP is

You know the green times vary quite a bit intersection by intersection, right? ;)

As the last photo shows, this is a decidedly Czech institution, inclusive of the heavily subsidized buffet restaurant for employees and visiting researchers :)

Very happy to begin the archival research stage of my dissertation at the Czech National Archive in Prague! I do still have a lot to learn about the nuts and bolts of archival procedures in CZ :) still excited to begin studying the displacement of Czechoslovak citizens after the 1938 Munich treaty.
