I think at this point it's obvious that I'm the author of both (even though I use different names) so nobody really seems shocked when there's a mix of SFW and NSFW at my table. I think you'd be more than fine at Flamecon as long as a minor can't just grab one and start reading it right there.

I put the NSFW books on their own shelf on my tabletop display (or on their own display all together, if there's enough room). Always the highest shelf so small hands can't reach them lol, and I bag them in plastic sleeves, clearly labeled with 18+, and I ask to see ID when unbagging or selling.

So I always have to check: are the characters being Evil?? Are they doing Wizard shit?? Are they FARMING?? and if they're not doing any of that or otherwise progressing the story in a meaningful way, then there's a problem!

another thing I find helpful is to use a gamedev concept called "Pillars" (basically: terms/ideas that define your project) and check yourself against them while you're writing. My wizard project is literally titled "Evil Wizard Farm", which, coincidentally are the 3 pillars of the story lol.

TBH the fact that most people wouldn't see the throughline from RR to a popular Overwatch ship (a game I've never played!!!) I think is proof positive that starting with something directly inspired and putting your unique human experience into it absolutely can produce something fun and new!! 😌👌

Examples of this in action: visited Tsukiji > made Sakana. Saw a whole bunch of Junkrat/Roadhog stuff > made RR lol. And my new wizard story is basically retconning every Resident Evil game to make the horrible mutant final boss the good guy. It's all wish fulfillment, basically!

I think for me, I have to see something I really like and then I start constructing something new in the spirit of it. That way I sort of start with a guiding light to work towards, and I usually have the ending in mind right off the bat. It also helps that I'm compelled to make stuff just for me.
