How Scientists Can Be Good Citizens We have a responsibility to ensure that our discoveries are used in the public interest. That isn’t always easy.

“Science and technology do not have values in themselves. It is we human beings who have values. And it is the responsibility of scientists and technologists, both as specialists and as citizens of the world, to help advise policy makers and governments,” Alan Lightman and Martin Rees write.

Did you know the most powerful force for climate action is LOVE—for our children, their future, and the world they’ll inherit?

That's right! Research shows this message moves hearts 12x more than jobs and 2x more than extreme weather.

I’m in Oklahoma now but I’m from Montana. All my family is still there. I’m so proud of Zooey. I’m also proud of the folks in Missoula who trust her with their vote. Thanks for the work both of you do everyday.

When independents did pick a side, they were slightly more likely to say Democrats are the light side and Republicans are the dark side.

1 year ago 0 0 0 0

Republicans were twice as likely as Democrats to see both parties as the dark side (20% vs. 10%). A plurality of those who are politically independent or from another party (42.9%) said politics and Star Wars are not comparable. Around 39% of independents said both parties are the dark side.

Only one-fourth of Americans in our survey said American politics should not be compared to Star Wars. A breakdown by partisans reveals differences. Democrats were more likely to see their party as the light side (61.5%) compared to Republicans (47.3%).

In our SPEER 24 survey, we asked respondents if they thought Democrats or Republicans were more like the “light/dark” side from Star Wars. A majority (54.5%) of respondents picked a side while about 17% said they are both like the dark side, and roughly 3% said they’re both like the light side.

Can modern politics be interpreted through the lens of popular media? Our research group wondered if people saw their own party in media that follows a storyline of good vs. evil.

On climate, did you know that only 11% of people in the US (and even smaller percentages in Canada, the UK, Australia and beyond) are dismissive?

Yet because their voices are so loud and persistent, people often think they’re 50%.

This is why I advocate so strongly for using YOUR voice!
