INSTANT RUNOFF ELECTIONS (0-26-13)
ASK COUNCILORS TO VOTE YES
What it does:
Implements Ranked Choice Voting to save the city money, time, and resources while making it easier for people to participate in elections
Why it matters:
• Albuquerque's December 2025 runoff cost the city 1.8 million dollars, money that could have gone toward community services. Instant runoffs, i.e. ranked choice voting, mean that people don't have to show up to vote multiple times for the same election. Instant runoffs also encourage diverse candidates to run without fear of splitting the vote and empowering extremists. And with instant runoffs, candidates must win majority support.
Sign up to comment at City Council by 4pm on Monday 4/6. If you are unable to attend, call your city councilor and ask them to vote yes!

BLM PROPOSAL: DRILLING IN CHACO CANYON
SUBMIT A COMMENT AGAINST THE PROPOSAL
What it does:
• The Trump administration wants to open public lands in the Greater Chaco Region to oil and gas drilling, allowing just 7 days for the public to comment.
Why it matters:
• The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has already leased over 90% of federal lands surrounding the Chaco Culture National Historic Park to oil and gas companies for drilling. Now, they want to roll back protections on 336,400 acres instituted by popular demand in 2023. If this goes through, oil and gas drilling will be allowed within 10 miles of the park boundaries, even on lands directly bordering the park.
Go to https://eplanning.blm.gov/Project-Home/? id=D949F582-402D-F111-8341-001DD804183B, click the "participate now” button and write a comment saying you are against the proposal.

We are horrified by Senator Heinrich’s vote to confirm Markwayne Mullin, Trump's nominee for DHS Secretary [1]. Mullin has advocated for "show me your papers" policies, supports ending birthright citizenship, and co-sponsored the Laken Riley Act to allow indefinite detention of immigrants [2]. With this vote, Heinrich subverted the will of New Mexicans who elected him and facilitated further cruelty toward our neighbors. He isn’t up for reelection until 2030, but we will not forget. We will use the next four years effectively to build our movement of ordinary people who expect better than this, and we will be ready.

SAFER COMMUNITY PLACES ORDINANCE (0-26-15)
ASK COUNCILORS TO: VOTE YES on the ordinance AS-IS | VOTE NO on Councilor Dan Lewis's amendment
What it does:
Designates schools, clinics, and shelters as "Safer Community Places" requiring ICE agents to present judicial warrants before entry
• Blocks ICE from using city property for staging operations (like parking garages)
Requires businesses to post signs marking private spaces and notify staff within 24 hours of federal 1-9 audits
Why it matters:
This ordinance protects the heart of our community: where our children learn, where families seek healthcare, and where those facing hardship find shelter. Every family deserves to access these spaces without fear.
Additionally, Councilor Dan Lewis's proposed amendment is legally unsound and would create liability and risk for the exact hardworking Burquenos this ordinance aims to protect.

GROSS RECEIPTS TAX INCREASE (0-26-16)
ASK COUNCILORS TO: VOTE NO
What it does:
• Increases the Gross Receipts Tax, which places a heavier burden on working families in Albuquerque
Why it matters:
Working families in Albuquerque are already stretched thin. When the city needs more revenue, it shouldn't come from the people who can least afford it. The mayor has made careless budget choices, and the city council has failed to provide proper fiscal oversight on the overall budget and the cost of lawsuits that taxpayers end up paying for. We need accountability from our elected officials, not more taxes on households already facing rising costs for groceries, housing, and everyday goods.

IMMEDIATE RUNOFF ELECTIONS (RANKED CHOICE VOTING)
ASK COUNCILORS TO: SUPPORT IT & VOTE YES
What it does:
• Implements Ranked Choice Voting to save the city money, time, and resources while making it easier for people to participate in elections
The bill was heard in the Finance & Government Operations Committee on March 9. The committee voted 4-1 against advancing the ordinance.
However, under Albuquerque City Council rules, an ordinance can still be brought back to the full Council if four councilors vote to revive it. The next opportunity to do that is the March 16 City Council meeting.
Why it matters:
This isn't an untested theory. Santa Fe, Las Cruces, and many other cities across the U.S. have proven this works. Immediate runoffs strengthen our communities and families by making voting simple and ensuring more people are represented in our democracy. When more voices are heard, our government better reflects the people it serves. This is about building a democracy that works for everyone, not just the well-connected and wealthy.

In times of social media blackouts, the corporations are part of this cultural hegemony by selling their integrity and responsibility of democratic ideals for money and power.

As we pass the end of January, we remember Antonio Gramsci, a socialist revolutionary that spurred the understanding of cultural and political significance of mass media. The cultural hegemony that this administration is trying to achieve undermines our society’s growth and understanding.

The city and state needs to do everything in their power, including using their law enforcement powers, to get ICE out of Minneapolis now! The ICE agents involved in this or any other crimes need to be prosecuted immediately.

Albuquerque DSA stands with the people of Minneapolis in the face of ICE repression. The Trump administration has pushed racist demonization of the immigrant community, and the continued ICE presence has resulted in the murder of an unarmed woman supporting her community as a legal observer.
