Phyllites are formed when platy minerals adopt parallel orientations under metamorphism. This perfect alignment is called foliation, occurring in micas and serpentines. Hydrothermal fluids can infiltrate the cracks, forming the multicolour veins shown by a microscope.

Dunites are intrusive igneous rocks composed by >90% olivine. Olivine has potential for carbon sequestration: its acid dissolution captures aquatic CO2, simultaneously producing amorphous silica and nesquehonite, useful to produce carbon neutral cement and energy.

This bright section is from a volcanic bomb from Monte Cavo. Volcanic bombs are released during explosive eruptions and get quickly cooled in the air, forming a βbread-crustβ texture. These textures are even visible at macroscopic scales!

There are a few huge Doctor Who fans on the Musuem team and they just punched the air reading this!
During the Silurian period, over 400 million years ago, the West Midlands was covered by a shallow, tropical sea. Fossil evidence for this includes this Marsupiocrinus genus of extinct crinoid (sometimes called a sea lily), found in the Much Wenlock Formation in Dudley.
