Mine were turning entirely black after upload this morning. I switched from firefox to a chrome based browser and it started working, but I didn't experiment after that to see if it was just a coincidence or not.

When I was a kid, my friends and I decided it was a good idea to attach an old parachute to the front of a bicycle on top of a windy hill. The results were predictable, somehow nobody died, we didn't try it a second time.

(My biggest issues with the AI stuff are the mass IP theft and the idiots using it as an excuse to fire people tbh, but leaving all that aside...!)

I think we should distinguish between the hype around all those things and the utility of the things being hyped.

We now have a way to talk to computers in human language, have them do (often) what we ask, and talk back. We've imagined this since at least Star Trek.

I don't have those numbers and I don't engage in conversation as much as some people, but I agree.

The appeal to me of doing this here is precisely that I can see most of the posts and recognise the same names repeatedly. It's a manageable stream, not a deluge of anonymous images.

The 'firehose' feed of all posts is extremely easy to use, so it's safe to assume big AI companies are all using us as training data I think.. 🤷

'Misusing' alt descriptions is probably controversial but for art I reckon it's OK if they're part of the art rather than purely functional. :)

Same here.. I had a feeling that in practice they're mostly used as very high quality AI training data, in fact.

It gives a much better sense of the shape of the terrain than google maps does too.. It becomes very clear why roads around the coast are so fun/slow/exhausting (as the day progresses)
