Me: What about eco-modernism? Techno-optimism? Are those ideologies solutions or antidotes? Or are they inadequate to address the sheer degree of pessimism and anxiety driving this violence?
Mauro: From what I can see, doomerism and pessimism is now so widespread that I don't think those ideologies can work. A lot of people in younger generations believe we are doomed. They believe climate change is going to ruin our lives. There's wars, geopolitical conflicts. We're stuck with dystopian visions of the future. This isn't confined to anti-tech stuff, so therefore optimism has very limited effects.
Me: What gives you hope?
Mauro: That's funny because I'm working on a project that concludes there's no hope.

I asked @maurolubrano.bsky.social whether Hope or Optimism about AI and data centers could stem the coming tide of violence and threats over the industry

We wound up in the most doomer place imaginable and then laughed

Growing techlash has the potential to spill into violent extremism. Connecting insurrectionary anarchists, eco-extremists, and eco-fascists, our book of the week charts the contradictory emergence of "anti-tech extremism."

There have been some significant developments in anti-tech extremism as a driver of political violence recently: the anti-tech blackout sabotage in Côte d'Azur on 24/05, and the tragic 24/04 attack in Nantes. These trends are explored in Stop the Machines: tinyurl.com/ynaus6y2

This is the first in-depth study of anti-technology extremism, and it begins with a simple question:

Does anti-technology extremism have the potential to become a significant driver of political violence?

My book, Stop the Machines, is out today (July 28 in the US).

As AI advances and global crises intensify, a countercurrent is emerging: groups that want to dismantle the technological system, rather than merely critique or regulate it.

“Anti-technology extremism possesses a remarkable quality: flexibility. This characteristic enables it to unite disparate actors – such as anarchists and white supremacists – under a common banner.”
'Stop the Machines' by @maurolubrano.bsky.social‬ is out today in the UK.

Today, @maurolubrano.bsky.social explores the growing wave of attacks against #Tesla. He argues that some of the recent attacks, including those in Rome and Berlin, can be categorised as part of a broader anti-technology campaign rooted in insurrectionary anarchism.
