Loss of respect for rule of law can be traced right to the Supreme Court, which has made bizarre decisions, like the one saying that President is above the rule of law. dianeravitch.net/2025/05/14/c...

Here is a blockbuster Q! If our job is to best educate all of our children, how do we do that without employing some form of Diversity, Equity, and inclusion which has now been outlawed in education? Shouldn't that as a process be standardized in some way? #EdChat #
Those are interesting questions. I don’t think having standards technically diminishes the professionalism of teaching. I do think that a hyper focus on standards removes teacher autonomy and prevents teachers from using their pedagogical expertise. #EdChat #EduSky
The problem with education is that people in charge are more interested in efficiency than actual learning … deep learning and memory building is not very efficient #edchat #edusky
It's a good question. Students aren't one size fits all or programmed to the same-sex schedule - I think using global averages to determine this is silly - we need a new paradigm (shoot me plz) for how to bridge kids to standards. Closer to individual, much more flexible. #edchat
Some content areas are so mired by standards that the class is more of a script that repeats itself year after year leaving little wiggle room for the teacher to add much meat. #edchat
Multiple guess tests are flawed, but they are cheaper to score … #edchat
I think there should be some guidelines for all public schools to follow … sequencing of classes … I also think any school collecting state/fed funding should also follow the same guidelines. #edchat

Standards are usually updated every 5-7 years. How often should technology standards be updated? #edchat
Adrian, thanks for your important point. Do standards actually take the professionalism out of teaching? Have standards been created to "block" teachers from individualizing teaching to meet the needs of their specific students? #edchat
Many teachers say they resent and feel limited by tests and standards (aka teach to the test…what say you? #edchat
If standardized tests are suppossed to help us focus our standards to improve learning, why haven't we seen that work in 2 decades? #EdChat #EduSky
I worry that national standards leads to a narrow curriculum and prioritizes teaching to the test instead of critical thinking. #EdChat #EduSky
Sigh. Nat'l floor? Nat'l cornucopia? Anything without local/classroom flexibility should be a nonstarter, but students and parents deserve some expectations that are built out of the collective wisdom. As a history teacher, we really need to look at English, imo, & stop the laundry lists. #edchat
Let's remember that first-rate educational standards at the national or state level do not guarantee student success. Standards are only one part of the teaching and learning process. #edchat @edusky.bsky.social
What can we learn from the history of the standards movement? For example, initially politicians supported standards, then backed off when the standards were closely aligned with high stakes state tests? Do standards narrow the curriculum, or open the curriculum? #edchat
Do educational standards at the state or national level help you as a teacher? #edchat
Tonight's #edchat topic: Are national education standards viable in today's political climate? Given past results & concerns about standardized testing bias, can they truly improve learning? @realmstrdill.bsky.social @dianeravitch.bsky.social @ascdofficial.bsky.social @edusky.bsky.social

Hi Harvey, my colleague and I wrote this article on why GenAI does not have to undermine education. Please help us share it by reposting to promote dialog.

Thanks for joining #edchat tonight simulcast on X and Bluesky, on state mandated assessments and the effects, pros/cons. Thanks to co-moderators @tomwhitby.bsky.social @aggieashley.bsky.social @markwestonphd.bsky.social
Once the year-end standardized test is over, graded, and returned, there is never time to address any student's deficiencies. How does that make sense? #EdChat #EduSky
We can’t teach the “whole child” or “every kid” when we focus on the “graded” parts … schools have become the kids who ask “is this graded” … “how much is this worth” … “how till this affect my grade” … #edchat
Ripple effect of state mandated school accountability… same things as state testing … it becomes the only thing anyone cares about … focus on the things that gets a successful score/rating. #edchat
In addition to high stakes state tests (or instead of high stakes tests!) what assessment criteria would you use to evaluate school & individual student performance? Examples: portfolios, graduation rates, attendance rates, presentations, growth over time? #edchat @edusky.bsky.social @edutopia.org
I once observed a group of dedicated teachers who met as soon as the state reading standards were published. They were using highlighters to mark sections of the curr: not to emphasize what to teach, but to eliminate curr standards they knew were NOT tested previously! Testing pressures! #edchat
A downside of state testing is that it narrows the curriculum because teachers are pressured to teach "what will be on the test," which teachers can surmise from previous high stakes tests. #edchat
