On the left: an image of two jars filled with coins, one with a man's silhouette and one with a woman's, on a red background. The male jar contains a greater amount of coins. On the right: text that reads “$28,600 a year: what the average older Canadian woman lives on. Many choose flexibility or family over pay, only to arrive at retirement with a meagre pension.”
The gender pension gap isn’t just about retirement. It’s about a lifetime of unequal pay and missed opportunities compounding over decades. If today’s trends hold, what will retirement look like for the next generation of women? https://thewalrus.ca/canada-pension-gap/
So much of Silicon Valley has reached the conclusion that there is money to be made from American authoritarianism, writes Dave Karpf. With its ‘manifesto,’ Palantir wants to remind you that it reached that conclusion first, he says.
China’s top leader, Xi Jinping, called this week for the Strait of Hormuz to reopen, his first such comments since Iran effectively closed the strategic waterway last month in response to U.S.-Israeli attacks on its territory.
Almost half of US data centres that should be built this year will face delays
• Shortage of electrical gear like transformers, switchgear, batteries partly explains delays
• Manufacturing capacity for these devices cannot meet demand and builders rely on imports

Some techbros are more open about their politics than others. But the politics are pretty similar all round.
I'll say again: the richest man in the world regularly posts racist content on the social platform he purchased which, since said purchase, now regularly disseminates explicitly white supremacist content to millions of people.
I feel like we're sleepwalking into something and none of it is good.

Opening text of a thread by Palantir from X Because we get asked a lot. The Technological Republic, in brief. 1. Silicon Valley owes a moral debt to the country that made its rise possible. The engineering elite of Silicon Valley has an affirmative obligation to participate in the defense of the nation. 2. We must rebel against the tyranny of the apps. Is the iPhone our greatest creative if not crowning achievement as a civilization? The object has changed our lives, but it may also now be limiting and constraining our sense of the possible. 3. Free email is not enough. The decadence of a culture or civilization, and indeed its ruling class, will be forgiven only if that culture is capable of delivering economic growth and security for the public. 4. The limits of soft power, of soaring rhetoric alone, have been exposed. The ability of free and democratic societies to prevail requires something more than moral appeal. It requires hard power, and hard power in this century will be built on software.
Palantir put out a 22-point summary of their CEO's book The Technological Republic. It's pitched as a defence of the West, but if you read it through the VDA framework, verification, deliberation, accountability, what it's actually doing looks rather different.
