Recently finished this new book by Arne Westad and Chen Jian. Gripping account of the Cultural Revolution and the tumultuous transition to economic reform under Deng. Important to be reminded that none of these developments were predestined, both were down to personalities and contingencies.

The attitude of easily drawing moral demarcation lines about others/outsiders in discourse, while demanding an intrinsic or contextual understanding of the complex circumstances of our own problems. It's tragic how many people/movements fail because of this.
