Jade cups, Maya, Tikal, Guatemala, ~800CE, linked to the ruler Jasaw Chan K'awiil, probably a son or brother of this ruler. On the right the Maize God, symbolizing regeneration and the cycle of life. The cups were for ritual drinks, such as cacao, for the ruler on his journey to the underworld.

Years ago I came across this land art project at a display in the Joseph Beuys Room at Tate Britain. It is an illustration of how art can play a wider role in transforming society through consciously applied creativity. It made a deep impression on me.
