Not to mention the one emperor to preserve in his letters an astonishing account of winemaking-as-spectacle for the imperial family, recorded while he was a youth at Villa Magna. Certainly had better priorities than some!

Full day of excellent papers, responses & questions by researchers from across the world and museum staff on the Bronze Age, cross-departmental possibilities, Parthenon, & all sorts of ideas for the collection’s future in the context of the renovation project and redisplay of the Western Range.
Four panellists on stage speaking into mics with a screen behind showing an aerial map of the British museum with the western range galleries highlighted. The back of audience heads in the foreground.
Thoughtful, provocative and - most importantly - entertaining panel with @josephinequinn.bsky.social Alastair Blanshard, Salvatore Settis, Suzanne Marchand & Tom Harrison to end the first day of our British Museum/ @ics.bsky.social conference, “The Ancient Mediterranean and the British Museum”
Listen to ICS Senior Lecturer, Dr Emlyn Dodd on Australian national radio (ABC Evening show with Renee Krosch) discussing recent research on a new history of ancient Italian olive cultivation and oil production: (3:11 on): shorturl.at/KkoPp
And read the published research: shorturl.at/rRZD6
Exactly the same happened to us, in a similar timeframe.
Is a programme available for this? Sounds great!
The 3D printed siblings live on! Your actual lamp was getting handled by my MA class and a secondary school group last week 😅

Looking forward to giving the Peter Sadler #Archaeology Lecture at the University of Kent this week, talking about our excavations at Falerii Novi 🏛️ 🏺
Thanks to Luke Lavan for the kind invitation to present before we head back into the field this summer.
Members will be active in operations and decision making, and can be invited to join the main Editorial Board after their initial term.
Call for EOIs in an exciting new initiative by the Bulletin of the @ics.bsky.social (BICS) 🚨 🏺
The Emerging Editors Board is a unique opportunity for ECRs to gain editorial board experience and first-hand insight into the journal publication process.

Great chat with Renee Krosch on #ABC #Radio Evenings about my recent work on ancient Italian olives and oil!
Grateful for the invitation to come on and talk about archaeology and the ancient world on a major national broadcaster.

Olives have been essential to life in Italy for far longer than we thought! In a new article for @theconversationnz.bsky.social, @emlynkd.bsky.social explores the history of olive cultivation and olive oil production from the Neolithic to the Roman period: https://bit.ly/3M5OSTs @ics.bsky.social
Had a great time writing this piece for @aunz.theconversation.com using my recently published research in the AJA @chicagojournals.bsky.social (doi.org/10.1086/737823). 🫒

New research suggests olive trees have been exploited for more than 6,000 years. The first Italian olive oil was produced perhaps 4,000 years ago.
We’ve still got a few open places for this brilliant hands-on mosaic making training event next week at @ics.bsky.social in London!
Come along to have fun making, while thinking about ancient/modern practice and research with leading experts Ruaidhri Ryan and Will Wootton.

Thanks Vicky! I hope so. Now to get through term!

We wanted to create something to upskill & develop capabilities for careers in and beyond the museum sector.
Topics include: registration & cataloguing; curation & display; the purpose of the modern museum; science & conservation; communication & research. All in the context of #Greece and #Rome /3
After months of hard work on both sides, I’m joined by @levitan.bsky.social, @vickydonnellan.bsky.social and Tom Harrison in co-convening what is an exciting and innovative offering for the #London Intercollegiate MA in #Classics, #Ancient #History and #Archaeology. /2
A classroom with students sitting around tables arranged in a square, and lecturers at the front with a powerpoint slideshow behind.
Today we started teaching the first ever co-designed and taught joint MA module between the University of London (ICS/KCL) and British Museum (Greece & Rome)!
The module provides hands-on experience in a real-world #museum environment, with half the classes taught behind the scenes at the BM.

This is horrific to read, Zena. I’m so sorry that you have experienced this sort of behaviour in what, to my understanding, should be a safe, friendly and collegial space for discussion.
At least some of the time they used screw presses, like the one depicted just above this image in the same fresco (top right, in this photo of the entire fresco) - the same type of press as they used for wine and olive oil production!
I can’t remember how much this fresco in particular is discussed, but Miko Flohr’s (@mikoflohr.bsky.social) publications on the fullonica, including those at Pompeii, are extremely useful and informative on the topic.
Thanks for the shout-out, Sarah and team! Great issue 👏

Please do share and come along if in London 🏺 #ClassicsBluesky
Also increasing evidence for Antiochia as Cragum, just along the coast from Syedra, to fit a similar picture, increasing numbers of oil and wine production sites. Article on this in press with Leticia Rodriguez, illustrating remarkable new evidence from Antiochia! 🏺 #Classicsbluesky
The oileries at Syedra are fantastic (and v well preserved!) but to find urban/intramural oil production is not as unusual as this write up states. One only needs to look at the extensive data presented in our 2024 JUA article: doi.org/10.1484/J.JU...
